That is the job of Urban Design – a field of study that is still new to many people, but is becoming the backbone for sustainable urban development. At the Faculty of Urban and Rural Planning, which specializes in training this field in a systematic, practical and humane way, students not only learn how to draw roads and plan streets, but also learn how to "create living experiences" in every square meter of urban space.

When cities are no longer just “places to live”
Vietnam is one of the fastest urbanizing countries in Southeast Asia. Major cities are expanding constantly, with hundreds of new residential areas emerging every year. But the thing is: this development sometimes lacks human warmth.
● Treeless urban areas.
● The sidewalks are both small and uneven.
● Luxury apartments but no play areas for children or community living spaces for residents.
These things reflect the gap in urban design, when we only focus on the buildings, but forget about "life between the buildings".
Urban Design – The Profession of Organizing Urban Life in a Humane Way
Unlike architecture or engineering, urban design is the art of arranging cities in a way that people perceive, interact with, and engage with. People who practice this profession need to think multidimensionally: from spatial design, analyzing resident behavior, to understanding local history, culture, and climate change.
They answer questions like: How can seniors walk to the park easily? How can children play safely on their own in front of their houses? How can cyclists avoid being “lost” on the road? And how can public spaces connect people – rather than just exist?
Those questions do not belong to the construction industry alone, but are the responsibility of Urban Design students.

Learning space – where social thinking is sown
At the Faculty of Urban and Rural Planning, the Urban Design major is taught with an interdisciplinary - innovative - practical spirit. Students not only learn the theory of planning, architecture, landscape, but also have access to subjects on urban psychology, community behavior, public space management, and especially how to apply design thinking to solve social problems.
One of the special things here is that students are connected to the locality, real projects right from the first year of study. Instead of just doing simulation projects, students get to “go to the streets”, survey the community, measure the current situation, and come up with solutions to renovate real spaces – from a small alley, a market corner, to an old street or a new urban area.
Open career journey – from urban to community
Urban Design graduates can work in many fields:
● Planning, architecture and landscape design consulting companies;
● Urban development management boards, planning departments of districts;
● Non -governmental , sustainable urban development organizations;
● Creative startups in the field of public spaces and old urban renovation.
Especially, in the context of big cities like Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang... are moving towards "livable cities, smart cities, cities for people", the role of urban designers is increasingly appreciated.

Choose a career - choose a meaningful life
For many young people who are passionate about architecture, love beauty and care about the community, Urban Design is a choice that balances creativity and responsibility. This is not a field of study that seeks individual artistic ego, but a place where students must connect with society, listen to life, and solve spatial problems with sensitivity and professional knowledge.
The Department of Urban Design – under the roof of the Faculty of Urban and Rural Planning – is the place to nurture those who quietly create that change. Not ostentatious, not noisy, but persistent and full of humanity.
