Master the virtual world

Social networks open up a vast space for young people to connect, learn and express themselves. However, behind the halo of “likes” or “followers”, many young people are gradually losing themselves in the virtual world.

It is easy to see images of young people diligently editing photos, following trends, and making shocking statements to attract attention. Behind those neat photos is sometimes loneliness and a desire to be recognized. Many young people evaluate their self-worth through the number of interactions, considering virtual reputation as a measure of success. When virtual reputation becomes the goal, society faces the risk of distorted values among a segment of young people.

The reason is not only due to the attraction of technology but also stems from the change in the value system in modern life. The young generation grows up in a vast "sea" of information, where it is difficult to distinguish between truth and falsehood. If they lack courage and correct ideological orientation, they can easily get caught up in a spiral of illusion, forgetting the meaning of living with ideals and clear goals.

The consequences of a virtual lifestyle do not stop at the deviation of personal values, but also have a negative impact on the social environment. Many young people fall into comparison, lose confidence, lose direction, and even fall into a state of depression when online images do not accurately reflect real life. The disconnect between the virtual world and real life erodes communication skills, the spirit of sharing, and the ability to empathize. More dangerously, when life values are virtualized, people easily become indifferent and insensitive to community issues.

The solution does not lie in boycotting social media, but in how people master it. First of all, every young person needs to be equipped with “digital immunity” – that is, the ability to select, criticize and self-control online behavior. Only when they have the courage and ability to identify right from wrong, true from false, can young people not be led by social media.

Along with that, it is necessary to form a culture of responsible use of social networks, turning cyberspace into an environment for learning, creativity and sharing. Every post, every share, every comment should be considered as a cultural act.

When young people know how to respect the truth and promote human values, they will contribute to creating a healthy online ecosystem, where positive information is spread and bad and toxic information is pushed back.

In addition to individual awareness, the guiding role of family, school and society is extremely important. Families need to accompany, listen and guide their children in online behavior. Schools should include digital skills education , communication skills and life value orientation in the curriculum. Mass organizations, especially the Youth Union, need to create more practical playgrounds and forums for young people to express themselves through real actions and real contributions.

In the digital age, “virtual life” can bring temporary joy, but only real value can create a lasting position. By knowing how to use social networks to learn, create and contribute, young people not only master technology but also contribute to spreading the image of a generation of Vietnamese youth who are brave, compassionate, creative and responsible.
