The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has just officially announced the third subject of the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year, in addition to Math and Literature.
On January 8, right after the Ministry of Education and Training finalized the regulations for admission to grade 10, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City also provided detailed information about the subjects in this exam in the city.

Accordingly, the 10th grade entrance exam in 2025 in Ho Chi Minh City includes 3 subjects (Math, Literature and English).
So after a long wait, English is officially the third subject. According to Mr. Ho Tan Minh, Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, this is a subject that is consistent with the will and aspirations of the leaders of the Department of Education as well as the majority of parents and students of the city.
Specifically, Literature and Math have a test time of 120 minutes each; English has a test time of 90 minutes. The expected test time is early June 2025.
According to the regulations on secondary and high school admission announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, provinces can choose to take entrance exams, consider admission to grade 10 or combine them. Particularly for the entrance exam, the exam includes Math, Literature and a third subject (or a combination exam).
The third subject is selected by the Department of Education and Training from subjects assessed by scores, including: Foreign Language 1, CivicEducation , Natural Sciences, History and Geography, Technology, and Information Technology. However, provinces and cities cannot choose a third subject for more than three consecutive years.
Previously, in October 2024, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City announced the structure of the 10th grade exam in 2025.The structure of the Literature exam will include 2 parts: Part 1: reading and understanding literary texts and writing paragraphs; Part 2: reading and understanding argumentative or informational texts and writing social argumentative essays.
Part 1 will be divided into 2 questions, reading comprehension (3 points), paragraph writing (2 points). Part 2 will be reading comprehension (1 point), social argumentative writing (4 points).
For the new exam structure, students will be required to clearly demonstrate the two skills of reading and writing. Questions will be divided into levels of thinking: recognition, comprehension, and application.
The HCM City Department of Education and Training noted that there is one question about Vietnamese in the reading comprehension section of literary texts. The test is designed to integrate reading comprehension and writing skills, and the content in the writing section is related to the text in the reading comprehension section.
According to information from the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, the structure of the Math exam will include 7 lessons.
Specifically, lesson 1 on functions includes 2 questions (1.5 points); lesson 2 on equations includes 2 questions (1 point); lesson 3 is a practical math problem related to probability and statistics (1.5 points); lesson 4 is related to expressions including 2 questions (1 point); lesson 5 is a practical math problem related to geometry (1 point); lesson 6 is a practical math problem related to equations, inequalities, and systems of first-degree equations with two variables (1 point); lesson 7 is a plane geometry problem including 3 questions (3 points).
The English exam for grade 10 includes 4 parts: Part 1 phonetics from questions 1 to 4 (1 point); part 2 vocabulary, grammar, communication from questions 5 to 16 (3 points); part 3 reading comprehension from questions 17 to 28 (3 points); part 4 writing from questions 29 to 40 (4 points).
With a 40-question test, the thinking levels are divided into: Recognition (20%); understanding (40%); application (40%).
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training said that it will assess language proficiency not only based on students' memorized knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, but also requires assessing the ability to understand and apply language knowledge in appropriate contexts, especially real-life situations.
