Intercropping fruit trees with coffee trees on the same garden and hill area is being applied by people in Ngok Wang commune, Dak Ha district, Kon Tum province. The model sounds like it is about to turn into a dense garden, but the billionaire farmer in Kon Tum earns billions.

Mr. Nguyen Luan (village 7, Ngok Wang commune) is a typical example of intercropping agricultural production.

Leading us around the 7-hectare garden where fruit trees are intercropped, Mr. Luan said that his family used to specialize in growing coffee.

Mr. Nguyen Luan's orchard (village 7, Ngok Wang commune, Dak Ha district, Kon Tum province) is laden with ripe fruit. This seemingly "random" model gives Mr. Luan an income of 3 billion/year, making him a billionaire in Kon Tum.

However, at that time, coffee prices were low, so he proactively researched and learned intercropping models to increase income.

By 2019, he had started intercropping oranges, tangerines and durians on an area of nearly 2 hectares, while the rest was still used for coffee cultivation. Up to now, Mr. Luan's fruit trees have grown well, yielded high yields and brought in a stable income.

In 2024 alone, Mr. Luan's garden achieved a total output of 65 tons, including more than 23 tons of coffee beans and 45 tons of oranges, tangerines, and durians. With the price of 130,000 VND/kg of coffee beans, 20,000 VND/kg of oranges, tangerines, and 70,000 VND/kg of durian, Mr. Luan's family earned about 3 billion VND.

"Intercropping has many advantages, bringing steady income throughout the year. Moreover, intercropping fruit trees helps reduce costs for care, fertilizer and labor while increasing profits," Mr. Luan happily said.

Mr. Nguyen Dang Hai's fruit tree intercropping model brings in an income of 1 billion VND/year.

The effectiveness of Mr. Luan's family's model of intercropping coffee with fruit trees has been followed by many households in the village.

Mr. Nguyen Dang Hai (village 7, Ngok Wang commune) said that he realized that the model of intercropping fruit trees of households in the village brought high economic efficiency. In 2022, his family renovated 4 hectares of coffee land and started implementing the intercropping model.

Specifically, Mr. Hai cleared 2 hectares of coffee trees that had expired, invested in a drip irrigation system, and converted the land to intercropping many types of fruit trees such as oranges, tangerines, star apples, rambutans, strawberries, guavas, etc. using organic methods.

On the remaining area, he intercropped durian trees with coffee trees. After 3 years of care, Mr. Hai's family's intercropping model has initially brought about results. In 2024, Mr. Hai's family harvested a total output of nearly 30 tons, earning more than 1 billion VND.

Not only Mr. Luan and Mr. Hai's families, but also many other households in the commune have been implementing the model of intercropping fruit trees. In fact, the model of intercropping coffee trees and fruit trees is bringing high economic efficiency to people in Ngok Wang commune.

The fruit tree intercropping model of Mr. Nguyen Luan, a billionaire in Kon Tum, brings in an income of 3 billion VND/year.

Mr. Ngo Tan Khoa - Chairman of the People's Committee of Ngok Wang Commune, Dak Ha District (Kon Tum Province) said that initially, only a few households in Village 7 learned and practiced intercropping fruit trees on coffee growing areas to increase income. Later, from intercropping models that brought high economic efficiency, income increased by half the value compared to areas without intercropping.

Since then, the Commune People's Committee has promoted and mobilized local people to visit and learn the model and implement intercropping for people. Up to now, the whole commune has more than 350 households intercropping fruit trees such as oranges, tangerines, durians... on an area of 135 hectares of coffee trees.

"The model of intercropping coffee trees and fruit trees has helped people in the commune increase their income and gradually stabilize their lives.

In the coming time, the Commune People's Committee will continue to promote propaganda work, organize classes to visit and learn good production models. At the same time, mobilize and guide people to apply scientific advances in production, intercropping crops on the same area to increase income," said Mr. Khoa.
