In recent days, some social media accounts have been exploiting an incident that happened 10 years ago to spread false information about the collection, management, and treatment of medical waste at Bach Mai Hospital.

The incident was then strictly handled, and individuals who violated medical waste management regulations were subject to the highest form of disciplinary action. Therefore, re-opening old information (the incident was closed) affects the reputation of the medical sector and national security.

Dr. Truong Anh Thu, Head of the Infection Control Department (Bach Mai Hospital) said that the hospital currently generates 8 to 9 tons of waste every day, of which about 1.5 to 1.7 tons are hazardous waste. The hospital is currently in strict compliance with legal regulations related to waste management and treatment in general, and hazardous waste in particular.

The hospital has updated regulations and procedures for medical waste management in accordance with the Law on Environmental Protection and Circular No. 20/2021/TT-BYT on medical waste management within medical facilities; issued decisions and procedures guiding medical waste management; and established records on environmental management.

Regarding medical waste management, hospitals regularly monitor the volume of medical solid waste, from recording the volume of infectious hazardous waste, the volume of non-infectious hazardous waste to recording the volume of regular solid waste used for recycling; logbook of wastewater treatment system operations...

Bach Mai Hospital has fully performed its responsibilities as a source of hazardous waste in environmental protection, pollution prevention and environmental degradation; complied with regulations on hazardous waste management according to the provisions of the Law on Environmental Protection and related circulars and decrees.

Medical waste classification is carried out right at the Departments/Rooms of the Hospital, where there are locations to place packaging and medical waste classification tools conveniently and safely, with posters instructing how to classify each specific type of waste. The report on waste classification of each unit is compiled monthly by the Infection Control Department and feedback is sent to the units.

The inspection and supervision of medical waste classification and collection at the units were carried out fully and strictly. The Infection Control Department and the network of infection control staff at the units carried out inspection and supervision of waste classification and environmental sanitation at the units in the Hospital with a frequency of 1 time/month. During the inspection and supervision of medical waste classification and collection directly at the units, the Infection Control Department promptly reminded and re-instructed the acts of classification and collection in violation of regulations.

The wastewater treatment system is monitored regularly and continuously by the Administration Department, supervising and updating the operating status of the system through the operation log to the specialized department and the Administration Department Leader for timely handling.

Environmental monitoring is carried out periodically according to the Law on Environmental Protection 2020; Decree 08/2022/ND-CP and commitments in the Environmental Protection Project: Ambient air monitoring: 2 times/year: Solid waste and wastewater monitoring 4 times/year. The analytical parameters in the hospital's wastewater samples after treatment are currently within the allowable limits according to QCVN 28:2010/BTNMT: National technical regulation on medical wastewater. The wastewater treatment system operates effectively. The analytical parameters of ambient air samples are all within the allowable limits according to the National technical regulation on air quality; National technical regulation on noise.

Annually, the Hospital conducts training, coaching, communication, and dissemination to employees and related subjects about regulations on medical waste management according to Circular 20/2021/TT-BYT. At the same time, it arranges funds for medical waste management (implementation of service contracts for collection, transportation and treatment of hazardous medical waste; Contracts for collection, transportation and treatment of normal solid waste; Contracts for operation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater treatment systems at the Hospital...); funds for purchasing means and equipment for collecting medical solid waste properly and sufficiently...

Therefore, the hospital wishes and requests that the authorities verify and strictly handle organizations and individuals who intentionally resurrect old information to discredit the hospital in particular and the health sector in general.
