Prime Minister and his wife begin official visit to the Dominican Republic

At 11:00 p.m. on November 19 (local time), Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his wife, along with a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, arrived in the Dominican Republic, beginning an official visit to the country, after successfully concluding a working trip to the G20 Brazil.

After about 6 hours of flight from Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), the plane landed at Las Americas airport, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

This is the first official visit to the Dominican Republic by the Prime Minister of Vietnam. The Dominican Republic is the second largest country in the Caribbean, after Cuba, and the third largest in terms of population. Welcoming the Prime Minister and his wife at the airport were Minister of Agriculture Limber Cruz; Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic Jose Julio Gomez; Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to Vietnam Jaime Francisco Rodríguez; Director of the Protocol Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic Francisco José Cantizano Nadal. During the two days in the Dominican Republic (from November 19 to 21), the Prime Minister and his wife will have many important activities, creating momentum to promote the expansion of economic , trade and investment relations between the two countries. Especially in potential areas such as agriculture, industry, construction materials production, export processing zone business, energy, oil and gas, telecommunications and tourism.

Currently, economic and trade relations between Vietnam and Dominica are still quite modest. Two-way trade in 2022 reached 150.2 million USD, up 16.6% over the same period in 2021; in 2023 it reached 95.8 million USD; in the first 9 months of 2024 it reached 56 million USD.

Dominica highly appreciates Vietnam’s achievements and position in connecting the country with Southeast Asia and Asia. The two countries are discussing the possibility of negotiating cooperation agreements on tourism, investment promotion and protection, and science and technology.

Earlier, on the same morning, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended and delivered a speech at the discussion session on "Sustainable Development and Energy Transition" at the G20 Summit. During his three days in Brazil (November 16-19), the Prime Minister had a busy schedule with a series of important bilateral meetings with leaders of countries and major international organizations attending the G20. In particular, the head of the Vietnamese Government delivered important messages in his speech at two discussion sessions on anti-poverty and sustainable development, and energy transition.

Under the leadership of the Brazilian Presidency and efforts to put aside disagreements, the G20 Summit adopted a Joint Statement emphasizing the message of international solidarity, promoting multilateralism, joining hands in the fight against poverty and promoting sustainable development.

The Republic of South Africa takes over the G20 Presidency 2025 from Brazil, with the theme of next year's G20 expected to be "Promoting solidarity, equality and sustainable development".

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's participation and responsible contributions at the conference were highly appreciated by G20 countries and guests, demonstrating Vietnam's growing stature, role, prestige and international position in addressing global challenges.
