Domesticating "Western horses" for economic development

ALSO BREEDING HORSES BUT NOT SELECTING LOCAL BREEDS LIKE SOME BREEDERS IN THE HIGHLANDS, THE HORSE BREEDING MODEL OF MR. TRINH VAN MY, AN TIEN VILLAGE, BAO THANG COMMUNE MAKES MANY PEOPLE CURIOUS AND WANT TO LEARN ABOUT IT. MR. MY SUCCESSFULLY DOMESTICATED 100% OF FOREIGN BREED HORSES, BRINGING HIGH ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY AFTER BREEDING.

People in Son Hai commune (old) cannot forget the image of a farmer riding a horse to buy gasoline in 2024. That image spread on social networks and most of the comments praised the beautiful horse.

When directly learning and visiting Mr. Trinh Van My's farm, we found out that he owns 15 American-British horses, each one tall, strong, with manes as smooth as velvet carpets. In front of the farm, Mr. My also fenced off a large area to let the horses roam and facilitate the domestication of Western horses, which are somewhat more difficult than native horses.

Having tried many pig and chicken farming models, Mr. Tran Van My was then brought to horse farming by chance. While browsing social networks, he saw information related to raising imported horse breeds for racetracks, farms or feng shui researchers, so Mr. My wanted to try his hand at this type of horse. Finding a reputable place, he imported 1-2 horses to try raising, then found it okay so he imported more than a dozen more to raise.

“Western horses” have the same characteristics as native horses such as eating mainly grass, having few diseases, and not needing to be grazed much. However, the difference is that breeders must be patient in taming them because their personalities are more aggressive than native horses.

To tame 15 horses, at first, Mr. My directly took care of them, often talking to, petting, and cleaning the horses.

When the horses were sick, he cooked porridge and "coaxed" them to eat. Gradually, a "bonding bond" developed. It seemed that whatever Mr. My said, they understood and followed.

Mr. My shared: Raising "Western horses" requires attention to factors such as choosing a reputable source of breeding stock, with clear documents proving origin to ensure quality and avoid health risks; barns must be airy, clean and suitable for each breed of horse; breeders need to pay attention to nutrition, health care, and full vaccination for horses; food for foreign horse breeds is similar to that of native horses, not fussy, mainly grass and cooked bran.

However, the biggest difficulty for those who start raising foreign horses is the cost of buying the breed. Each breeding horse costs from 100 to 200 million VND, so the initial investment is quite large, but once you master the care techniques, the profit is very high.

Of the 15 horses of Mr. My's family, 6 have bred so far, of which 3 have been sold, each for 180 million VND. The main consumer markets for foreign horse breeds are farms, racetracks, and feng shui horse breeders.

To learn all the knowledge about horse raising, Mr. My had to spend time researching and learning; consulting through the media, social networks, and going directly to the South to practice at some racetracks to accumulate horse raising techniques and experience. During the process of raising horses, Mr. My also connected with veterinarians to treat horses when they had health problems.

Mr. My is also willing to share his experience with households who are planning to raise imported horses. He posts techniques for caring for, preparing food for, or taming horses on his personal page and directly guides those who come to learn from the model.

I hope the model of raising imported horses will be replicated to create more economic development opportunities for local households.

Mr. Trinh Van My

"When I started raising this breed of horse, there was not much information or models to learn directly, but now I am confident to share my knowledge and experience with households who want to raise imported horses," Mr. My confidently affirmed.

To date, Mr. My is the first person in Bao Thang commune and a few households in Lao Cai to successfully domesticate foreign horse breeds, becoming an effective economic development model. Raising foreign horse breeds has great potential for development but also requires investment capital, knowledge and techniques for domestication and proper raising.

Currently, the market for foreign horses is quite potential. If you boldly invest and master the care techniques, it will certainly bring high profits compared to other risky breeding models.
