Discrimination, male chauvinism, and gender-based violence still exist in some families, especially in mountainous areas and among ethnic minorities, which have harmed girls and affected their development. To promote gender equality, in recent times, the provincial Women's Union at all levels has implemented many creative models and movements to equip members and children with knowledge and ensure their safety.
Dai Duc is a mountainous commune of Tien Yen district with nearly 100% ethnic minorities. In order to achieve gender equality and solve urgent problems for women and children, in recent times, the Women's Union of the commune has promoted propaganda and mobilized families in the area to change their "thinking and working methods", contributing to eliminating prejudices and gender stereotypes in the family and community.
Ms. Tran Thi Phau, Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Dai Duc Commune (Tien Yen District) said: To promote gender equality in protecting children and women, in 2023, the Women's Union of the commune established 2 "Leaders of Change" clubs, attracting 60 members, in which the number of men and women participating is almost equal, voluntarily. Up to now, the club has propagated over 20 sessions at 2 primary and secondary schools in the area, the content of which is selected knowledge and skills to propagate domestic violence prevention and child abuse prevention. At the same time, the commune has maintained the "Trusted Address" model since 2019 at the Commune Health Station with 12 members. The club has advised and helped 13 victims of domestic violence, including 5 children; at the same time, propagandized on the media and loudspeaker clusters on social networking sites about "Sunshine House" of Quang Ninh province; Publicize the hotline number widely so that people know and can promptly support women and children when domestic violence and abuse occur...
Recognizing the role of the Women's Union at all levels in promoting gender equality, in recent years, the Quang Ninh Women's Union has paid attention to improving knowledge and skills on gender equality for female officials and members at all levels. Many activities to protect members and children have been organized, such as: Establishing a "Community Communication Team", which has so far attracted the participation of 546 members with 71 teams; 44 "Leaders of Change" Clubs, with the participation of 1,320 ethnic minority children aged 11 to 15 years old. Through the content of the Club's activities and the Club's activities at schools, children are equipped with more knowledge and skills to help protect themselves and promote children's participation in children's issues. They will have a deeper, more correct and clearer understanding of issues related to gender equality and children's rights.
Along with promoting the clubs, the Women's Union at all levels has promoted propaganda in many diverse forms on gender equality, such as increasing communication through social networks (Zalo, Facebook...) hanging banners, signs, and boards on roads and streets with high population density... At the same time, in 2024, the Women's Union at all levels organized 44 training courses on knowledge and skills to propagate domestic violence prevention; prevention of abuse against women and children; eliminating gender prejudice and gender stereotypes, preventing and responding to gender-based violence...; designing and printing 1,000 cloth bags printed with messages on gender equality to distribute to women members in communes.
It can be said that with the specific models and activities of the Women's Union at all levels in the province, it has contributed to raising awareness of people and the community about gender equality; contributing to eliminating gender prejudice, caring for material and spiritual life and building a safe environment for children and women in ethnic minority and mountainous areas of the province.
