(PLVN) - On the afternoon of December 6th, the Department of Crop Production, the Vietnam Horticultural Association, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hoa Binh province, and related units, in coordination with the Vietnam Agriculture Newspaper, organized the forum "Improving the quality, value chain, and promoting the consumption of fruit products in the northern provinces".
According to a report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , Vietnam's fruit and vegetable industry is firmly asserting its position in the international market. Fruit and vegetable export turnover in the first 11 months of 2024 reached US$6.66 billion, an increase of 28.2% compared to the same period in 2023 – the highest level ever recorded – with key products such as durian, dragon fruit, banana, jackfruit, and mango.
Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports are projected to reach $7.2 billion in 2024, with fruit exports potentially exceeding $6.5 billion.
The northern provinces, with their favorable soil and climate, have strong potential for developing fruit trees such as lychee, longan, orange, pomelo, plum, and peach. Currently, Vietnam has opened its market to 19 types of plant-based agricultural products and fresh fruits for official export to major markets such as China, the United States, South Korea, Japan, the EU, and Australia.
Mr. Dinh Cong Su - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoa Binh province. |
At the forum, Mr. Dinh Cong Su, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoa Binh province, said that with its diverse climate, land, and soil conditions, Hoa Binh has the potential to develop many types of crops, especially fruit trees. Currently, the province has 16,000 hectares of fruit trees, mainly including oranges, pomelos, lemons, longan, bananas, etc.
Recognizing fruit tree cultivation as a key sector in economic development, Hoa Binh province has implemented numerous policies and initiatives such as renovating unproductive orchards, attracting investment in agriculture, implementing a citrus fruit replanting project, and boosting trade promotion activities. All these efforts are focused on improving the quality of the agricultural value chain and avoiding uncontrolled, rapid development.
According to statistics, the province has 88 registered growing areas, of which 53 are for export. More than 2,400 hectares of fruit trees have been certified safe by standards such as GlobalGAP, VietGAP, and organic. The province's key products, such as bananas, oranges, and pomelos, are currently enjoying stable sales in supermarkets and major cities, and are also being officially exported to markets such as the United States, Canada, and the EU.
However, according to Mr. Su, the province's fruit tree development still faces some limitations, particularly the unclear goal of increasing added value. Most products are primarily consumed fresh due to difficulties in preservation and processing, resulting in production value not meeting expectations.
At the forum, agencies, associations, localities, businesses, and cooperatives proposed solutions for the sustainable development of fruit trees in the northern provinces. Simultaneously, participants updated on the progress of market access and technical requirements of several markets for fruit products, introduced integrated pest management processes, and discussed solutions for post-harvest processing, preservation, and storage of fruit and vegetable products.
