Newsweek quoted the video as claiming that 80% of the world 's luxury handbags, including Hermès, Prada... are made in China. "They take nearly finished bags from factories in China and just repackage them and put a logo on them. Something like that," the person who posted the video asserted.
The video , which was removed from TikTok earlier this week, had received more than 10 million views at press time.

What does Hermès say?
A 2023 report by German online platform Statista identified between 200 and 250 fashion and accessories brands worldwide that are classified under the “luxury” label. There are about 70 to 100 globally recognized luxury fashion brands that are considered to be at the top. These brands are often owned by conglomerates such as LVMH and Kering.
For its part, Hermès confirmed that it does not manufacture its handbags in China. Hermès bags are made in France, and the brand has workshops in areas including Pantin (just outside Paris), the Ardennes, Lyon and Normandy, among others.
It takes between 15 and 40 hours to create a Hermès bag, which can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000,000. For styles like the Birkin, Kelly or Constance, artisans can spend up to five years training before they can make one. Hermès uses its own tannery to ensure quality control from leather to handbag.
Hermès bags are authenticated by a hot-stamped artisan code, usually located under the flap or inside the bag. These codes indicate the year and workshop where they were made.
Other popular luxury fashion brands include Prada, Miu Miu, and Saint Laurent. Prada is owned by the Prada Group, as is Miu Miu, Prada's sister brand. Both brands manufacture their handbags at the company's Valvigna complex in Tuscany, Italy. Saint Laurent manufactures in France and Italy and has a leather manufacturing facility in the leather handbag region of Tuscany, where famous luxury brands such as Gucci and Dior also have factories.

Strict labeling regulations
While the TikTok video claims that these luxury bags are made in China, this is highly unlikely given labeling regulations in the US and Europe.
To be labeled “Made in USA,” a product must meet the “all or substantially all of the manufacturing in the USA” standard set by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). This means that all of the product’s significant parts, processing, and labor must originate in the United States. Final assembly must take place in the United States, and the product must not be “substantially transformed abroad.”

Labeling in Europe is governed by EU Regulation 952/2013. But France and Italy have stricter guidelines to protect their luxury and artisan industries. For a product to be labeled “Made in Italy,” the last substantial transformation of the product must take place in Italy, meaning the main part of the manufacturing process takes place in the boot-shaped country. To be labeled “Made in France,” a product must undergo its last substantial transformation in France, meaning the last major step of manufacturing takes place in the hexagon-shaped country.
French fashion brands, including Hermès, will often go beyond this, ensuring that design, material sourcing, cutting, assembly and finishing are all done in France. Many adhere to the Origine France Garantie (OFG) – an even more stringent national certification that requires that essential product features be created in France and that 50% of product units come from French operations.
