A new study has just released a list of the cheapest countries to live in for expats.

The study, conducted by international insurance company William Russell (UK), was based on criteria such as health care costs, transportation, rent, food and utilities to determine the cheapest country.

Topping the rankings this year is Vietnam - a country considered an ideal destination for foreigners who want to save money but still enjoy a high quality of life.

A representative of insurance company William Russell commented that Vietnam has long been a favorite choice for budget travelers and digital nomads.

This is a country that has everything to offer a quality life, from sunny beaches to modern cities. Along with that are other attractive factors such as rich cuisine , friendly people, a blend of modern conveniences and ancient traditions.

According to a report conducted and published by William Russell, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Vietnam in major cities is 361 USD (9.4 million VND). Meanwhile, a high-end 3-bedroom apartment costs an average of 801 USD (more than 20 million VND). This figure is considered half cheaper than in the UK.

William Russell experts also assessed that the total cost of living in Vietnam is said to be about 59% cheaper than in the UK.

Among the major cities in Vietnam, Da Nang is known as the place with the most attractive cost of living while still ensuring a bustling life. Visitors here can enjoy the vibrant coastal city, easy access to beautiful beaches.

Also on this year's list, in addition to Vietnam, there are 4 other countries in the Top 5 countries with the cheapest cost of living in the world . These include Bolivia, Georgia, India and Cambodia.

The assessment results of insurance company William Russell did not surprise many people because previously Vietnam was continuously recognized as "The most livable place in the world", topping the list of low-cost countries for foreigners.

In December 2024, Vietnam ranked first in the report by InterNations , a Swiss-based organization based on a survey of international visitors. This is also the fourth consecutive year that the S-shaped country has been in this position.

Experts say that this result of Vietnam is not accidental. With 86% of foreigners rating the cost of living in Vietnam on a positive scale, twice as high as the global average of 40%. Half of the foreign visitors participating in the survey also said that the cost of living in Vietnam is very good, far exceeding the global average of 12%.

Previously in December 2023, in an article published on Australia's travel consulting site Travel2Next , Vietnam was commented as "one of the countries with low living costs and becoming a great destination for foreign visitors to visit".

Next, Travel2Next also lists some basic living expenses in major cities in Vietnam for international visitors to refer to. Each city will have different living standards. The site provides the living expenses of 3 representative cities, including Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Da Nang.

Specifically, in Ho Chi Minh City, Travel2Next said that the rental price in this city ranges from 400 USD to 2,000 USD/month depending on each person's financial ability.

For rent of $2,000 (VND52 million), visitors can stay in especially high-end apartments with full amenities. The lowest long-term stay in this city starts from $400 (about VND10 million) for a basic apartment.

Next is Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, which can be an interesting and vibrant place to live. Basic apartments start from 300 USD (7.8 million VND) depending on your budget. If you want to stay in a more luxurious apartment, the price will start from 1,000 USD (26 million VND). Amenities in the apartments are similar to those in Ho Chi Minh City.

However, life in Vietnam is not without its challenges. International visitors gave the lowest scores to the environment and climate index. Many expressed concerns about air quality, urban environment, green services and traffic issues.
