Standing member of the Secretariat Tran Cam Tu holds talks with First Deputy Secretary General of the African National Congress (ANC)

NDO - On May 19, at the Party Central Committee Headquarters, Comrade Tran Cam Tu, Politburo member and Permanent Secretary of the Secretariat, held talks with Ms. Nomvula Mokonyane, First Deputy Secretary General of the African National Congress (ANC), South Africa, within the framework of her visit and work in Vietnam from May 17 to 22.

At the talks, Comrade Tran Cam Tu warmly welcomed Ms. Nomvula Mokonyane leading the high-ranking delegation of the ANC Party to visit Vietnam, the first visit of the ANC Party to Vietnam in 25 years and taking place on the occasion of the birthday of President Ho Chi Minh - the beloved leader of the Vietnamese people, believing that the visit of the First Deputy Secretary General of the ANC Party will contribute to further promoting the traditional friendship and cooperation between the two Parties and the two countries of Vietnam and South Africa.

First Deputy Secretary General Nomvula Mokonyane thanked Comrade Tran Cam Tu for the warm and thoughtful reception, sharing that this visit to Vietnam is one of the steps to implement the results of the historic high-level phone call between General Secretary To Lam and ANC Chairman and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa last April, while continuing to affirm the commitment of the ANC and the South African Government to promoting the traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Vietnam.

The Deputy Secretary General of the ANC said that the ANC and the people of South Africa greatly admire Vietnam and President Ho Chi Minh, emphasizing that the Vietnamese people's struggle for national independence is a great source of inspiration and encouragement for the people of African countries, including South Africa.

The First Deputy Secretary General of the ANC emphasized that the delegation's visit to Vietnam is of great significance, taking place at a time of great changes in South Africa as well as the world situation; expressing hope that through this visit, it will contribute to the planning of the ANC's guidelines and policies for Party building and national leadership in the coming years.

In an atmosphere of comradeship and brotherhood, the two leaders shared about the situation of each Party and each country and affirmed the importance of preserving and promoting the relationship between the two ruling parties in orienting and promoting the multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and South Africa to become increasingly deeper, more effective and more substantive.

The two sides agreed to promote the implementation of the contents of the historic phone call between General Secretary To Lam and ANC Chairman and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and the contents of the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the two Parties signed during the visit, focusing on promoting contacts and delegation exchanges, especially high-level delegations between the two Parties and the two countries, and enhancing the sharing of experiences in Party building, leadership and management of the country.

Standing member of the Secretariat Tran Cam Tu thanked the Chairman of the ANC and the President of South Africa for inviting the leaders of the Communist Party of Vietnam to attend the G20 Political Parties Conference and the leaders of the state to attend the G20 Summit held in South Africa in November 2025, affirming that senior leaders of Vietnam will make efforts to contribute to the success of these important events; at the same time, he looked forward to welcoming the Chairman of the ANC and President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa to visit Vietnam as soon as possible.

The First Deputy Secretary General of the ANC affirmed that the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the two Parties is an extremely important milestone in the relationship between the Communist Party of Vietnam and the ANC, demonstrating the traditional solidarity and close relationship between the two sides, and will also create a framework for substantive exchanges and cooperation in many fields between the two Parties and the two countries in the coming time.

In that spirit, the First Deputy Secretary General said that the ANC will continue to send high-level delegations including leaders of many Party committees and Government agencies to Vietnam to exchange and discuss cooperation with agencies of the Party and Government of Vietnam, strongly promoting bilateral cooperation.

Discussing specific cooperation results between the two countries in various fields, the two leaders agreed that the Vietnam-South Africa cooperation relationship has seen many positive developments in recent times, especially in bilateral trade with an impressive turnover of nearly 1.8 billion USD in 2024.

In the coming time, the two sides agreed to promote economic and trade cooperation to develop commensurate with the potential of the two countries, agreed to coordinate effectively in implementing the mechanisms of the Intergovernmental Partnership Forum, the Defense Policy Dialogue and the Vietnam-South Africa Joint Trade Committee, continue to closely coordinate in multilateral mechanisms and enhance cultural and artistic exchange activities to enhance mutual understanding between the people of the two countries.

The First Deputy Secretary General of the ANC agreed to expand cooperation areas such as energy, agriculture, and digital transformation; and welcomed Vietnam's proposal to negotiate and sign a free trade agreement between Vietnam and the Southern African Customs Union (SACU).

The two leaders also discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern, agreeing that the two sides will continue to closely coordinate and support each other at international multilateral mechanisms for peace, cooperation and development.

At the end of the talks, Standing member of the Secretariat Tran Cam Tu and First Deputy Secretary General Nomvula Mokonyane signed on behalf of the two parties a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the Communist Party of Vietnam and the African National Congress.
