According to Marca , Benfica insisted on a transfer fee of 50 million euros for Carreras. However, Real tried to negotiate a reduction in the fee to around 35-40 million euros. Previously, "Los Blancos" reached a personal agreement with a 5-year contract with Carreras.
Negotiations have dragged on for weeks without progress, forcing Real's board to consider alternative options. Coach Xabi Alonso has his sights set on former Leverkusen player Alex Grimaldo. The 29-year-old defender has expressed his desire to join a top club. If the Carreras deal falls through, Grimaldo could soon have the chance to move to the Bernabeu.
Carreras is still considered a priority target for coach Xabi Alonso, as they see him as the ideal solution for the left-back position. If the deal is successful, Carreras will be the third new signing this summer, after Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Besides the left-back position, Alonso also asked Real's board of directors to recruit a real "number 9" striker who can act as a wall and support his teammates like Joselu before. Alonso always likes to use a tall striker who knows how to support the team like Victor Boniface or Patrik Schick.
Having a wall player up front would free up Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior, two players who prefer to play on the wings rather than centrally.
Alonso wants to complete the deals before June 10 to be able to register his squad for the 2025 Club World Cup, a tournament in which Benfica will also participate.
