The cesarean section rate is increasing rapidly because people want to give birth at a good time and are afraid of the pain of normal birth.

The rate of cesarean section in Vietnam is still increasing and is expected to continue to increase rapidly. The desire to have the baby born on a good day and time, fear of pain during normal birth, the belief that cesarean section is safe for both mother and baby... are the reasons for this increasing rate.

This information was announced by experts and doctors in the fields of obstetrics, gynecology and pediatrics at the 2025 Obstetrics and Pediatrics Scientific Conference with the theme: "Maternal and child care: Innovating practices, improving quality standards", taking place on the afternoon of November 15 in Ho Chi Minh City.

Doctor CKII Pham Thanh Hai - Deputy Director of Tu Du Hospital (HCMC) - said that cesarean section is the most common surgery in the field of obstetrics and gynecology in the world and this rate continues to increase over time.

At Tu Du Hospital, the rate of cesarean sections in women in labor accounts for about 40% of the total number of births.

Faced with this increasing trend, the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2014 officially recommended measures to reduce this rate. One of the serious and increasingly common complications after cesarean section is placenta accreta, which occurs when the placenta attaches to and invades the old surgical scar.

Dr. Le Xuan Duc - Medical Director of Thuan My TDM Hospital - also said that in recent years, the rate of cesarean section in Vietnam and globally has tended to increase year by year. This rate in our country has increased from about 15% in 2005 to 27-30% in 2022.

"This is a very high rate and the trend will continue to increase," Dr. Duc predicted.

Analyzing the reasons for the increase in cesarean section rates, Dr. Duc said that it comes from several main factors: the desire of the family and the mother to "choose a good date and time", the fear of pain during normal birth, and the belief that cesarean section is safer for both mother and baby.

In addition, with the "patient-centered" care model implemented in Vietnam in recent years, the wishes of pregnant women are given more importance. Therefore, choosing the birth method according to the mother's wishes becomes an important factor in medical decisions.

In addition, the rate of cesarean section increases each year partly because if a mother has had a cesarean section in her previous birth, subsequent births are also more likely to require surgical intervention.

"A pregnant woman can give birth naturally but still wants to have a cesarean section. The doctor is responsible for advising and explaining the risks and complications that can occur when having a cesarean section compared to a normal birth. Any method of birth has potential risks," Dr. Duc shared.

According to Dr. Bach Van Cam - senior consultant for emergency resuscitation at Children's Hospital 1 (HCMC), cesarean section is becoming a "trend" as more and more families choose it without fully assessing the risks to the newborn if the intervention is not properly indicated.

Caesarean section before 39 weeks increases the risk of respiratory failure in the baby, especially if born too early before 36 weeks, this risk is even higher because the lungs are not fully developed. Children's Hospital 1 has received a number of cases of newborns with respiratory failure due to caesarean section too early.

"Vaginal birth is still the best method when there is no mandatory indication for cesarean section," Dr. Cam emphasized.

To minimize complications during cesarean section, Dr. Hai emphasized the need for close monitoring and performing surgical techniques according to a unified process and with proper training.

Elective caesarean section should be performed at 39 weeks of gestation to reduce the risk of respiratory distress in the newborn. In some special cases, such as mothers with HIV infection or twin pregnancies, caesarean section may be considered earlier, from 38 weeks.
