DTO - Recently, many localities in the province have developed rural market models, attracting a large number of people and tourists from near and far to visit, shop, and enjoy traditional dishes. This contributes to attracting tourists, developing the economy , promoting the local image...
In 2022, implementing the plan of Cao Lanh City People's Committee on tourism development, contributing to building the local image, Tan Thuan Dong Commune People's Committee organized a rural market on Tan Thuan Dong Islet to promote local tourism development and help people have more income. Initially, the model had only 24 households participating in displaying and buying and selling local specialties. Up to now, more than 60 households have participated, creating richness and attractiveness for each market.

Tan Thuan Dong rural market operates from 2pm to 8pm every Saturday, with 2,000 or more visitors each day. To date, Tan Thuan Dong rural market has attracted more than 105,000 visitors from within and outside the province and foreign visitors to visit and eat, with revenue of several billion VND.
Coming to the rural market, visitors can experience traveling by boat across the Tien River. Most of the traders here are local people, the shops are small, simple huts with thatched roofs, bamboo walls... Most of the items for sale are handmade by the locals.
Mr. Tran Cong Hiep, residing in Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City, shared: “I chose to come to Tan Thuan Dong rural market because I followed the information on newspapers and radio and saw that the space here is airy, recreating familiar images in the countryside, immense rivers, fruit-laden gardens... In particular, when coming here, visitors can enjoy many rustic, delicious dishes, typical of the West such as: grilled snakehead fish, grilled shrimp, grilled mice, grilled bananas, fish noodles, lotus milk, ginseng water...”.
Delighted with the rural market space, Ms. Le Thanh My, a resident of Sa Dec City, confided: “I really like the Tan Thuan Dong rural market space because the vendors are friendly and hospitable, and the food and drinks are very rich. Along with rustic dishes, at the rural market, local people participate in selling items with a strong rural flavor at reasonable prices such as: wild vegetables, fruits... Coming here, I am moved when the childhood memories of being taken to the rural market by my mother come flooding back.”
Many tourists come to visit the Go Thap rural market model (Thap Muoi district)
Go Thap rural market (Tan Kieu commune, Thap Muoi district) has its own unique features when organized in the form of an ancient rural market associated with a lotus space at the Go Thap National Special Relic Site. The stalls are decorated in the style of a traditional Southern market with thatched roofs, stalls made of bamboo, wood and other rustic, simple materials available locally. Here, visitors can enjoy many delicious traditional dishes. This model is organized by the Go Thap Relic Site Management Board in coordination with the People's Committee of Thap Muoi district once a month on the last Saturday of the month. During Tet and festivals, the rural market will operate longer. Go Thap rural market serves visitors to visit, take photos, eat and drink, and combine cultural and artistic exchanges, and traditional music.
The Long Thuan rural market model (Long Thuan commune, Hong Ngu district) is jointly organized by the People's Committee of the commune and the Long Thuan Safe Vegetable Production and Consumption Cooperative. This model aims to recreate the old scene with full traditional and rural dishes. During the operation, the Organizing Committee is interested in propagating and mobilizing food and beverage traders to ensure food hygiene and safety; regularly collect waste, maintain environmental hygiene...
It can be seen that the rural markets take place regularly, not only helping to preserve cultural values, but also being a form of community tourism that brings many interesting and new things, initially effective, attracting many tourists from near and far. Ms. Huynh Thi Hoai Thu - Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Dong Thap province, said: "The rural market is a tourism model that aims to recreate the space of the old rural market, attracting tourists from inside and outside the province; helping to consume products, especially local agricultural products, increasing income for many people and contributing to promoting the local image. In the coming time, the unit will have a plan to coordinate and support rural market models to improve operational efficiency".
