Vaccination and proper wound care reduce the risk of death from rabies

The Ministry of Health recommends that people should not be subjective about rabies. It is necessary to get vaccinated against rabies in time to protect yourself and the community.

Recently, two deaths in Gia Lai province, due to dog bites and not getting timely rabies vaccination, have once again raised concerns and are a warning about subjectivity and lack of knowledge in rabies prevention.

According to a representative of CDC Gia Lai, up to now, the province has recorded 9 deaths due to rabies in 2024. Rabies is one of the most dangerous diseases with a mortality rate of nearly 100% if not treated promptly.

Nationwide, statistics from the Department of Preventive Medicine show a startling number: 84 deaths nationwide due to this disease.

However, it is worth noting that rabies is completely preventable with full rabies vaccination and prompt treatment of the wound after being bitten.

While rabies is vaccine preventable, under-vaccination, lack of awareness about dog and cat safety, and improper wound management remain serious problems.

According to medical experts, rabies is not only a risk to people bitten by dogs and cats, but also a potential threat to society as a whole. In remote areas, where vaccination rates for pets are low and the situation of stray dogs is not controlled, rabies remains a pressing problem.

When bitten by a dog or cat, the most important thing is to treat the wound immediately and get a timely rabies vaccination. Do not wait until the disease is obvious before going to the hospital, because by then, the disease has progressed too quickly, and life is fragile and only in its final moments.

Every individual and every family has a responsibility to prevent rabies. Vaccinating dogs and cats and keeping pets safe not only protects their health, but also protects human lives. Don't let painful, heartbreaking deaths from rabies happen again.

Let's act now, so that the pain does not continue to repeat itself, so that we no longer have to witness lives being unjustly taken away, just because of subjectivity and ignorance. That is the only way to turn pain into a valuable lesson, protecting the health and lives of the community.

Rabies is completely preventable if proper preventive measures are taken, such as vaccinating dogs and cats. Accordingly, people need to vaccinate their pets against rabies regularly and get booster shots every year. This not only protects pets but also helps prevent the spread of rabies virus to the community.

Keep dogs and cats in a safe area: Pets should be leashed or locked up when outdoors. If dogs are outdoors, they should be muzzled to prevent biting. Children should also be educated about safe contact with dogs and cats to avoid being bitten.

When bitten by a dog or cat: Wash the wound under running water with soap for at least 15 minutes, then disinfect with 70% alcohol or iodine alcohol.

Never self-medicate or seek out traditional healers. After being bitten by a dog or cat, people should immediately go to a medical facility to get a rabies vaccine and anti-rabies serum. If the vaccine is given before the bite, the number of injections will be fewer and the treatment process will be simpler.

Some people are still concerned about the side effects of rabies vaccines, especially problems related to the nervous system and memory. However, Dr. Nguyen Tuan Hai (Safpo/Potec Vaccination System) said that the new generation of rabies vaccines is now produced using modern technology and no longer causes side effects like the old generation of vaccines.

This vaccine minimizes impurities and does not use mercury preservatives (thimerosal), so it does not adversely affect the health of the vaccinated person.

The Ministry of Health recommends that people should not be subjective about rabies. It is necessary to get vaccinated against rabies in time to protect yourself and the community. Health agencies and local authorities need to strengthen propaganda and education for people on rabies prevention, especially in remote areas where vaccination rates are low and the situation of stray dogs is not controlled.

Despite the availability of an effective rabies vaccine, rabies continues to claim many lives due to negligence in vaccinating dogs and cats and in treating bite wounds. Therefore, raising awareness and implementing timely preventive measures are very important to protect public health.
