Tien Giang: Promoting the role of the elderly in community development

(ABO) On the morning of June 23, the Association of the Elderly (NCT) of Tien Giang province held a conference to summarize the project to replicate the model of Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs and the emulation movement "Old Age - Bright Example" for the period 2021 - 2025.

Attending and giving a speech at the conference, Comrade Nguyen Thanh Dieu, Member of the Provincial Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the Tien Giang Provincial People's Committee, praised the efforts of the Provincial Elderly Association at all levels in protecting, caring for and promoting the role of the elderly. At the same time, he suggested that in the coming time, the Association at all levels should continue to promote its exemplary role, actively mobilize members to participate in local movements, focus on replicating effective models, especially the model of Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs to adapt to the aging population.

At the conference, representatives of the elderly from districts, cities and towns presented papers and shared experiences in caring for the elderly in the community, effectively organizing the Action Month for the Elderly; and how to operate the Intergenerational Self-Help Club model suitable to local conditions.

After 5 years of implementing the movement "Old age - Bright example", the Provincial Association of the Elderly currently has 173,114 members operating at all levels of the Association in the province. The Association promotes the role and experience of the elderly in socio -economic development, poverty reduction, implementation of project programs, local socio-economic development, promotion of sports, cultural and artistic movements... Notably, there are more than 39,000 healthy elderly people who have registered to participate in economic activities.

Comrade Nguyen Thanh Dieu awarded Certificates of Merit to outstanding individuals in the patriotic emulation movement "Old age - Bright example" for the period 2020 - 2025 and implementing the Intergenerational Self-Help Club model.

At the same time, the Provincial Elderly Association at all levels focused on providing health care, visiting and giving gifts to outstanding elderly people, organizing recreational activities during holidays and Tet, etc. to create trust and excitement in the activities of members and the elderly. Accordingly, the Association at all levels organized and mobilized the donation of more than 69,700 gifts to poor, near-poor, and disadvantaged elderly households, worth VND 22.56 billion; built 412 new houses, repaired 344 solidarity houses for poor elderly households, and those with housing difficulties, etc.

With the attention and direction of the Party Committee and the government, the support of relevant sectors and organizations, the support of the community, especially the members of the Elderly Association, the strong focus of the Elderly Association at all levels, from 2022 to present, the whole province has mobilized the establishment of 247 new Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs, bringing the total number of clubs established to date to 357 clubs, reaching more than 35% of hamlets and neighborhoods with clubs. Notably, 16 commune-level units have completed the establishment of Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs in 100% of hamlets and neighborhoods.

On this occasion, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Elderly Association and the Provincial People's Committee, the Provincial Elderly Association awarded Certificates of Merit to collectives and individuals with outstanding achievements in the patriotic emulation movement "Old age - Bright example" in the period of 2020 - 2025. In addition, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Elderly Association awarded Commemorative Medals to elderly members with many contributions "For the cause of protecting, caring for and promoting the role of Vietnamese elderly".

In addition, 22 groups received Certificates of Merit from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee for implementing the Intergenerational Self-Help Club model; 8 groups and 25 individuals received Certificates of Merit from the Provincial Elderly Association for effectively implementing the Intergenerational Self-Help Club Project.
