In case you missed it, "Emilia Pérez" is a musical about a transgender Mexican drug lord. It was picked up by Netflix after its premiere in Cannes. Starring Karla Sofía Gascón, the film was nominated for numerous awards, with Gascón declaring at the Golden Globes: "The light always wins over the darkness... I am who I am, not who you want me to be."

But since then, through a search of her old tweets, it has been discovered that she has made a lot of problematic statements in the past. Muslims, George Floyd, Chinese people - they have all been criticized. But perhaps the worst thing she has done in the eyes of the community she is trying to impress - Hollywood - is criticize the Oscars.

Emilia Pérez has grossed $13.5 million (£11 million) on a $25 million budget (not including marketing) and has been a box office success. Netflix is hungry for awards, but Gascón's past social media post-mortem is likely to deter them.
