TikTok Shop Goes Live in the US

This is a feature to buy and sell goods right in the popular TikTok application. This feature is displayed prominently in the application and continuously recommends random products to users.

According to an early version reviewed by Bloomberg, the majority of the items displayed are low-cost products from China. TikTok Shop will compete with Amazon to reach its goal of selling $20 billion in goods this year.

“Even during the test, there were more than 200,000 verified US sellers on TikTok Shop selling legitimate products, including more than 150,000 beauty products that were authenticated through our process and represented some of the biggest names in the beauty business,” a TikTok spokesperson said.

In its user terms, TikTok says “we make no representations or warranties, express or implied, that any content on the TikTok Shop is accurate, complete or up-to-date.”

“We have no visibility into or control over the content available through such sites or resources, and you agree that we are not responsible or liable for any such content,” the statement added.

Bloomberg reported that TikTok is processing payments through its app, meaning the company will also collect additional information about users, including card details, billing addresses, and shipping addresses.

That could eventually lead to more regulatory scrutiny of the company. TikTok has come under pressure in the US over its data privacy practices.
