Hackers are developing sophisticated techniques to attack Wi-Fi networks.

According to TechSpot , cybersecurity experts have just issued a warning about a sophisticated new cyberattack technique developed by Russian hackers, capable of remotely infiltrating Wi-Fi networks without physically touching the target.

Dubbed the 'Nearest Neighbor Attack', this technique allows hackers to infiltrate a target Wi-Fi network by chaining together and exploiting vulnerabilities in neighboring networks.

Specifically, hackers will attack a vulnerable Wi-Fi network near the target, then gain control of a device within that network and use it as a 'bridge' to attack the target Wi-Fi network. The worrying aspect is that hackers can carry out this chain of attacks through multiple intermediate Wi-Fi networks, making tracing and identifying the perpetrators extremely difficult.

This technique was discovered by cybersecurity firm Volexity while investigating a cyberattack in 2022. Evidence indicated that the perpetrators were the Fancy Bear hacking group (APT28), affiliated with Russia's military intelligence agency.

Experts believe this sophisticated attack method represents a new step forward in Russia's cyberattack tactics, demonstrating the increasing sophistication and danger posed by state actors in cyberspace.

To prevent this type of attack, experts recommend:

• Limit the range of your Wi-Fi signal.
• Hide your Wi-Fi network name (SSID).
• Use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication.
• Regularly check and monitor Wi-Fi access points.
• Pay particular attention to securing access points near windows and exterior walls.

Experts warn that this type of attack could become more common in the future, so organizations and individuals need to be more vigilant and implement necessary security measures to protect information in cyberspace.
