Russian hackers' dangerous new Wi-Fi attack technique
Dubbed 'Nearest Neighbor Attack', the technique allows hackers to penetrate a target Wi-Fi network by chaining and exploiting vulnerabilities in neighboring networks.
Specifically, hackers will attack a vulnerable Wi-Fi network near the target, then take control of a device on that network and use it as a 'bridge' to attack the target Wi-Fi network. What's worrying is that hackers can carry out this attack chain through many intermediate Wi-Fi networks, making it extremely difficult to trace and identify the culprit.
The technique was discovered by cybersecurity firm Volexity while investigating a cyber attack in 2022. Evidence suggests that the perpetrator is the Fancy Bear hacker group (APT28), part of Russia's military intelligence agency.
Experts say this sophisticated attack method is a new step forward in Russia's cyber attack tactics, showing the increasing sophistication and danger of state actors in cyberspace.
To prevent this type of attack, experts recommend:- Limit Wi-Fi broadcast range.
- Hide Wi-Fi network name (SSID).
- Use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication.
- Regularly check and monitor Wi-Fi access points.
- Pay special attention to securing access points near windows and outside walls.
Experts warn that this attack tactic may become more common in the future, so organizations and individuals need to be more vigilant and apply necessary security measures to protect information in cyberspace.
