The tragic situation of Ajax

In the early morning of November 6, Ajax suffered a 0-3 defeat at home to Galatasaray in the Champions League qualifying round.

Ajax's decline is not just about results on the pitch.

Ajax used to be a formidable force with the peak of 4 C1/Champions League titles. Their best recent achievement was reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League in the 2018/19 season and further losing to MU in the final of the Europa League in 2016/17.

However, after 4 matches of the 2025/26 Champions League qualifying round, Ajax is the worst team in the tournament. Osimhen's hat-trick right at the Johan Cruyff stadium sank Ajax, pushing them into darkness.

Before the match, Ajax received high expectations because of the home advantage and welcomed a Galatasaray that was considered to be of equal strength, unlike Chelsea, Inter Milan or Marseille - the 3 opponents they had met before in the Champions League this year. In the past, Ajax had never been afraid of Turkish representatives in the continental arena, as the number of wins in 12/14 encounters was clear proof.

However, Ajax continued to play poorly. They did not even score a goal against Galatasaray. After 4 matches, Ajax is at the bottom of the table with 0 points, 14 goals conceded and only 1 goal scored. They are the worst team in the Champions League this season.

John Heitinga, despite being an Ajax legend as a player, is struggling to inspire and shape the team's style of play. According to experts, the Ajax board paid the price for placing their trust in the former Dutchman, who is too inexperienced as a coach. Since Heitinga took over, Ajax have only won 5, drawn 5 and lost 7 of their 17 games in all competitions.

A win rate of less than 50% is alarming for a team that once dominated the Eredivisie and made its mark in Europe. Ajax clearly need a major overhaul to save the situation.
