At Mong Duong Coal Joint Stock Company - Vinacomin, putting the light CGH longwall with a capacity of 300,000 tons of coal/year into operation since 2020 has helped the company solve many difficult seams and complex geology. The indicators show a steady increase in productivity and a strong improvement in working conditions. This is TKV's first light CGH longwall.
5 years of operating the longwall at this mine have also shown the integrity, synchronization and high stability of the support system during operation. The most outstanding advantage of the lightweight self-propelled platform is that the support and cover range of the longwall reaches 100%, so the safety factor is almost absolute. In particular, thanks to its high stability and ability to adapt to fluctuating and complex geological conditions, the ultra-light mechanized longwall is quite suitable for production areas in Mong Duong Coal.
From the effectiveness of the first light-duty CGH longwall models, from 2020 up to now, underground coal mining units in TKV have proactively researched, installed and operated the system.
On October 10, 2025, at the +125 quarry, Nam Mau Coal Company held the inauguration and installation of the CGH project sign in the coal mine, a particularly meaningful milestone in the unit's technology transformation journey. The coal mine has a capacity of 250,000 - 300,000 tons of coal/year, including 80 synchronous hydraulic supports, combined with roadheaders, scrapers, crushers, transmission bridges, automatic control systems and combined transport equipment. The entire chain is operated in a closed loop, allowing for continuous, safe and efficient mining.

According to Mr. Le Tri Thuc, Manager of KT6 Workshop - the unit that is managing and operating the light CGH longwall, the investment in the mechanization system has helped Nam Mau Coal reduce 30 - 40% of direct labor, while increasing labor productivity to 20 - 25 tons/person/shift, double that of traditional longwall. Not only bringing high economic efficiency, the project also contributes to improving working conditions, enhancing safety levels, towards the goal of modernizing production and sustainable development of the Company.
Nui Beo Coal Joint Stock Company has just completed the investment and installation of the CGH light-duty longwall 40701, with a capacity of 350,000 tons/year, using 78 types of supports, cutting machines, and scrapers. During the project implementation, all excavation, transportation, installation, and testing work were carried out systematically.
Mr. Nguyen Van Dinh, Head of the Company's Mining Technology and Engineering Department, said: The Company has actively implemented tasks such as: Digging the tunnel to delimit the tunnel, installing the transportation equipment system in the tunnel, installing and testing the CGH tunnel mining complex on the ground, organizing transportation and installing equipment in the tunnel. By October 30, 2025, the above tasks were completed and the 40701 light CGH tunnel was ready for operation on schedule.
In the period of 2020 - 2025 alone, TKV has invested in 7 light CGH lines at Mong Duong, Ha Long, Uong Bi, Duong Huy, Khe Cham, Nam Mau, and Nui Beo coal mines. At the end of 2025, another line at Hon Gai is about to come into operation. Thus, by the end of 2025, TKV will have a total of 14 synchronized CGH longwall lines, with an expected output of 4.5 million tons, accounting for 16% of total underground coal output.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Tuyen, Deputy Head of TKV Mining Technology and Engineering Department, added: For 7 light CGH lines, the preliminary mining reserves have been determined to be about 9 million tons, at the units: Vang Danh, Nam Mau, Mao Khe, Uong Bi, Thong Nhat, Quang Hanh, Mong Duong. These are numbers that represent a breakthrough step, laying the foundation for the 2026 - 2030 period goal of TKV to increase the output of coal mined by CGH to 25-30% of the total underground coal output.
Unlike medium or heavy CGH lines that require thick, stable seams and large reserves; light CGH is designed with smaller, more flexible equipment size and weight, suitable for areas with reserves of 80,000 tons or more, average geological conditions, sloping to inclined seams, and limited installation space. The support force of these support systems can reach 3,900 kilonewtons. These features open up the possibility of CGH in areas that seem difficult to apply large technology, thereby increasing the CGH rate of the whole Group.
One of the most important effects of the lightweight CGH is to fundamentally change the working conditions in the longwall. The synchronous support trusses have high load-bearing capacity, stable truss body, and spacious working space. The main steps such as support, transportation, coal cutting, etc. are carried out by mechanical equipment, minimizing manual labor and contact with dangerous positions.
Not only has productivity skyrocketed, the resource recovery rate at CGH longwalls is 85-98%, much higher than with traditional technology. This is an especially important factor when easily exploitable resources are gradually depleted, mines are getting deeper and geology is becoming more complex.Source: https://baoquangninh.vn/tkv-nhan-rong-cong-nghe-co-gioi-hoa-hang-nhe-trong-khai-thac-than-ham-lo-3386093.html
