AFP quoted a spokesperson for the South Korean Constitutional Court as initially saying that the first hearing of the impeachment process was scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on December 16 (Seoul time).

Later, Acting Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court Moon Hyung-bae confirmed that the judges would meet at 10 a.m. to plan the impeachment process against the president.

According to Yonhap, investigators plan to question President Yoon Suk Yeol this week regarding allegations of treason and abuse of power through his declaration of martial law on the night of December 3.

All six judges of the Constitutional Court attended the first session. The court has a maximum of six months to decide whether to remove President Yoon from office or reinstate him.

Besides President Yoon, a number of high-ranking officials in the South Korean government and military face the risk of prosecution for treason.

A team of investigators from the police, the Ministry of Defense , and the anti-corruption agency is planning to summon President Yoon on December 18.

On December 15, the prosecution stated that they had previously issued a summons to the leader, but he refused to comply with the request.

In a related development, Han Dong-hoon, chairman of the ruling People Power Party (PPP), announced his decision to resign.

"I am stepping down from my position as chairman of the PPP," AFP quoted Han Dong-hoon as saying during a televised meeting, while also apologizing to all those affected by the imposition of martial law.

Despite his call for President Yoon's impeachment drawing opposition from PPP members, Han Dong-hoon said he has no regrets about doing so.
