Toyota has revealed a slew of new concept vehicles at this year’s Japan Mobile Show (JMS). Even the long-standing Toyota Hiace van has been given a new concept, possibly a preview of the next generation of this versatile commercial vehicle. With a design inspired by JMS' Kayoibako concept from two years ago, the Hiace concept features a nearly flat front fascia with signature U-shaped headlights at the top and pixel-themed fog lamps at the lower corners of the front bumper.
The sharp windscreen leads into the boxy body, which is understandable since the Hiace needs to maximize interior space to carry a variety of cargo sizes. To avoid the monotony, the Hiace concept is equipped with teardrop-shaped front side windows, which not only look different from most other vans but also help improve visibility. As for the rear side windows, they take up less space than the current Hiace, just small strips of glass just under the flat roof and around the rear of the vehicle. This seems to be the standard layout, regardless of whether it is used for transporting goods or transporting patients, with the higher roof version apparently intended for elderly care. Another difference compared to today's Hiace is the lack of side pillars (left side with cargo version), making loading or unloading goods much more convenient when the front and rear doors slide open.
The modular system also allows for a variety of interior and exterior customizations to suit a variety of needs. Inside, everything is very functional, with a simple dashboard that houses controls for key functions like gear selection and air conditioning. The two-spoke steering wheel incorporates more controls, while at the front of the dashboard is a full-width screen that doesn't look as usable as a touchscreen. All of this screen space can be used with a companion app to display additional information like navigation or delivery details. Toyota also uses the dashboard as a convenient storage area. There is even a phone charging port to help drivers read on-screen notifications more easily or use their smartphone as a secondary screen.
There is no information about the Hiace Concept's powertrain, as the current context of the world's auto industry is still at a crossroads: internal combustion engine - electric - hybrid. Other details such as the production version launch date or market launch date of this all-new Toyota Hiace mini van model have yet to be announced.
