Pay a high price for greed

Đ.THX was escorted into the courtroom earlier than the official time of the trial. Before she could sit down, X.’s eyes were already darting around looking for her relatives and two children. Facing the emptiness in the courtroom, the woman burst into tears, admitting that she was a “good-for-nothing” wife and mother. X. should have cherished what she had, but now looking back, everything had gone too far, she regretted losing so many precious things in her life just because of her bottomless greed…

In October 2016, Mr. LHB (born in 1970, Korean nationality) came to Da Nang to seek investment opportunities in the field of auxiliary chemicals for the textile and dyeing industry. In the process of looking for someone to provide language and legal support, Mr. LHB met X., a woman who could speak Korean fluently and was enthusiastic about her work. After a short time of contact, Mr. LHB trusted X. to support the procedures for establishing a business, directly manage operations, and handle all financial transactions on his behalf.

With X's participation, two companies were established. In which, X. was the owner of one company and the CEO of another. Taking advantage of Mr. LHB's absolute trust, from November 2019 to May 2023, X. secretly "drained" a total of more than 6 billion VND from the two companies. By mid-2023, when he began to suspect the financial situation, Mr. LHB checked the transaction history at the bank. Unexpectedly discovering many money transfers for unknown reasons, he immediately reported it to the authorities. At this time, X. had quit his job and did not hand over any assets or documents of the company.

According to X., the defendant used all of the more than 6 billion VND he had appropriated for personal expenses and sent it to his husband, HNT. When he was investigated, X. had no more assets under his name and no more money in his account. At the first instance trial, D.THX admitted all acts of appropriation of assets and asked for leniency under the law. However, the City People's Court's panel of judges determined that the defendant's actions were particularly serious, carried out over a long period of time, with careful calculation and sophisticated tricks, causing great damage to foreign-invested enterprises. Taking advantage of the trust of foreigners to appropriate assets not only affects specific enterprises but also affects the investment environment in Vietnam, creating a sense of hesitation and skepticism in the international business community about the transparency of business operations. Therefore, a severe sentence is needed to deter and warn the general public.

While waiting for the jury to deliberate, the loneliness in D.THX's eyes became more evident. Even though she knew what the outcome would be, X. could not stand still when she heard the court's verdict. Sentenced to 18 years in prison for "embezzlement of property", X. burst into tears. The price of greed is too high. Stepping out of the courtroom door, X. looked back in vain to find her children. 18 years to pay for her own tricks was worth it for X. But that amount of time was really too long for her two children, who were only 4 and 8 years old.
