DTO - Learning and experiencing is one of the new reform programs of theeducation sector today. In Long Thang commune, Lai Vung district, Long Thang 1 Primary School has implemented the model "Vegetable garden in school". The model not only provides students with a lot of knowledge and skills to apply in daily life but also helps them appreciate labor, love nature and be able to help others.

Coming to Long Thang 1 Primary School (Long Thang Commune, Lai Vung District), we were surprised by the green yard with many types of vegetables grown together. Such as water spinach, Malabar spinach, coriander... these are the results of the children after more than 3 months of hard work. Through the guidance of teachers, from preparing the soil, planting, watering daily, to catching harmful insects, weeding to keep the vegetables fresh, all were done by the children themselves. Although it took time and effort, everyone was very happy because it was the result that the children themselves created.
For the first time experiencing farming, Phan Ngoc Dan Nhu - a student of class 5/1 excitedly shared: "When the teacher guided me and my friends, I was very excited about this job. Each class will have 1 vegetable plot to grow, the steps will be divided equally for each group, from soil treatment before sowing to care, harvesting and selling. Then it will change when it is the next vegetable season".
Teachers said that during recess, the most attractive place for students is the vegetable garden. Taking advantage of their break time, students visit and take care of their vegetable garden, looking forward to the harvest each day. The money earned from selling vegetables will be used to raise funds to support disadvantaged students in the school. Phan Hung Thanh, a student in class 4/2, shared: “Growing vegetables helps me know that farming is very hard. Besides, it helps me learn to save more, unite with friends and be able to help disadvantaged students in the school.”
After school, many parents were surprised and touched to see their children growing vegetables and experiencing business skills outside of school hours. The vegetables grown and harvested from the model will be displayed for sale in front of the school gate, enthusiastically supported by parents and sold out very quickly. Ms. Huynh Thi Quynh Giao - a parent of a student happily said: "I find this model of growing green, clean vegetables very good, through which, it helps children to train themselves, have awareness in work, and appreciate the results of their work. Besides, it educates the spirit of "mutual love and support", knowing how to help those in need. I think this model should be replicated and spread more widely".
Sharing about the implementation of this model, Mr. Le Thanh Thich - Head of the Long Thang 1 Primary School Team, said: “This model is a practical experience for students, they will work the land, plant vegetables, take care of them, harvest them and sell them. It creates a connection between students and students, students and teachers, helping them know how to divide labor in a process. Up to now, the students have harvested the first crop of clean vegetables, the total amount of money collected is 1,925,000 VND. The students will raise this money in their classroom to help poor students”.

The school's vegetable garden currently has 10 plots for growing vegetables, with an area of about 100m2, corresponding to 10 classrooms from grade 2 to grade 5. Compared to the general area, this area is quite limited. However, the school has a plan to renovate and build more experiential spaces in the next school year. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thanh - Principal of Long Thang 1 Primary School, said: "In the coming time, the school will build an additional net house with an area of 100m2 to grow hydroponic vegetables and melons so that all students can study and experience better, contributing to improving the quality of education of the school and contributing to the success of the 2018 General Education Program".
The model of “Vegetable Garden in School” is a practical way, an interesting experience to help students practice the knowledge they have learned in books, apply it to real life to accumulate more useful life skills. Touching gardening tools and planting trees by themselves helps students improve their personality and agricultural skills, creating healthy emotions for each student.
