Ca Mau Newspaper Over the past period, Ngoc Hien district has promptly implemented many innovative solutions and approaches, helping people gradually escape poverty and achieve stable lives. As a result, the local poverty reduction efforts have achieved impressive figures. Just since 2015, the district has reduced the number of poor and near-poor households by 548; the poverty rate is now only 0.92%, a decrease of 2.07% compared to the beginning of the 2015-2020 term.

Speaking about the local achievement of reducing 103 poor and near-poor households in the past year, Ms. Tiet My Khanh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Rach Goc town, expressed her satisfaction. According to Ms. Khanh, the most important thing for poverty reduction to be successful is to instill in people a sense of self-reliance. If they continue to wait and rely on support from the government at all levels, it will be difficult for them to improve their lives. Furthermore, it is necessary to understand the specific circumstances, the reasons why people are poor, and what kind of support they need in order to find the right and effective solutions.

Understanding the difficult circumstances of Mr. Huynh Hung Cuong's family in Rach Goc B hamlet, Rach Goc town, due to lack of arable land, unstable employment, and precarious income, the local authorities facilitated his family's participation in a training course on animal husbandry techniques and provided them with 4 breeding mink. Thanks to the basic knowledge gained from the training and his own diligent research and learning, Mr. Cuong has successfully raised his mink herd. He also combined his mink farming with raising catfish in a pond to provide food and process waste from the mink, saving costs and generating income. After nearly two years of raising the herd, the number of minks has grown to 25.

The family of Ms. Nguyen Kim Oanh is considered one of the most difficult households to escape poverty in Rach Goc B hamlet, as her husband passed away early when her two children were still young, and she herself has no profession. To help Ms. Oanh escape poverty, the local authorities helped her access preferential loans and guided her in implementing a combined model to develop her economy.

Ms. Oanh shared: “Thanks to a preferential loan of nearly 30 million VND and the support and encouragement from the local authorities, I boldly invested in pig farming. Because of the successful business, I have a stable income, I voluntarily applied to be removed from the poverty list, and my children can go to school. I am very happy.”

Mr. Nguyen Nam Cuong, from Nhung Mien hamlet, Vien An Dong commune, said: “Previously, my family was facing financial difficulties. The local authorities came to encourage, guide, and facilitate the application process for a loan so my son could work in Japan. Since my son started working abroad, he has regularly sent money home each month, helping the family invest in crab farming. For more than two years now, crab farming has significantly improved our family's economic situation , providing a stable monthly income of over 40 million VND.”

The business of raising crab larvae helps Mr. Nguyen Nam Cuong's family earn more than 40 million VND per month.

Mr. Tran Hoang Lac, Chairman of the District People's Committee, informed that the current average per capita income of the district has reached 64.4 million VND, 15.5 million VND higher than at the beginning of the term. This is a positive sign, marking a significant improvement in the local poverty reduction efforts. It is believed that with these efforts, Ngoc Hien district will continue to achieve even greater results, contributing to the completion of the new rural district development process.
