At the Drug Rehabilitation Center No. 2 of Binh Phuoc Province (Phu Nghia Commune), the literacy class has just officially opened. A total of 40 students participated and were divided into 2 classes, studying according to the Primary School program (grades 1 and 2) with the main subjects including: Vietnamese and Math. The class is held 3 sessions per week, taught directly by the staff of the Culture - Education department of the facility.

Under the dedicated guidance of teachers from the Center for Continuing Education, students study according to the literacy program of the Ministry of Education and Training, focusing on basic skills: reading, writing and calculating. Although each person's age and circumstances are different, the common point is the excitement and desire to change and start over.

Lieutenant Colonel Duong Van Manh, Deputy Director of Binh Phuoc Provincial Police, in many working sessions with the facilities, emphasized that not only ensuring absolute safety for the facilities, the important task of the police force is to educate, restore personality, and create conditions for students to reintegrate into the community. In which, eliminating illiteracy is a fundamental solution.

The provincial police have proactively mobilized a team of teachers and developed a specific plan to organize classes right at the rehabilitation facilities. The learning space is fully prepared with tables, chairs, writing boards, and books. Students study in shifts, ensuring that they are consistent with the schedule of activities and therapeutic labor at the unit.

Sitting and diligently writing each letter, student NTT (born in 1990) tearfully shared: “I dropped out of school in the second grade because my family was poor, then I went to work for hire, and without realizing it, I fell into drugs. I thought my life was over, but who would have thought that when I came here, I would be able to go to school and receive the attention of the police officers. I never thought that one day I would sit in class, have books, pens and ink like this.”

In addition to opening classes, Binh Phuoc Provincial Police also synchronously deploys psychological rehabilitation, moral education, occupational therapy and vocational training activities at the facilities. The goal is to help students not only escape physical addiction but also heal their souls and have a clear direction after returning to the community.

According to the assessment of the responsible officers, literacy is one of the first but very important steps in the recovery process. Because when addicts have basic knowledge, they can access positive information, be more confident in communication, improve their ability to earn a living legally and reduce the risk of relapse. Not just a formality, literacy has become a symbol of humanity, a journey to help those who have made mistakes have a chance to start over. When knowing how to read and write, students can proactively study and learn about legal regulations on drug prevention and control. Thereby, raising awareness, better understanding of the harmful effects of drugs, contributing to building the will to rise up, reintegrate into the community, and become useful people for society.
