Right after finishing the second semester exam, VA (8 years old, Quang Binh) was taken by her parents to Viet Duc Hospital ( Hanoi ) for treatment of scoliosis.
The baby's father said that half a year ago, when bathing the baby, the family discovered that one shoulder was lower than the other.
Scoliosis needs to be detected early and treated promptly (photo TL).
Part of the baby's hip protruded outward, the ribs protruded on one side, and the legs were uneven. Taking the child to the district, provincial, and central hospitals for examination, the family received a diagnosis of congenital scoliosis, 54 degrees off the straight axis.
Scoliosis not only causes the child to have uneven shoulders, torso, and pelvis, but the triangle area next to the body (when the arms hang down) on the right side is also much wider than the other side. To improve the curvature, the child has had to constantly practice hanging from a bar for the past few months, and his hands are full of calluses and scratches.
"The baby was diagnosed with the disease quite late, and surgery was indicated to prevent the progression of the curvature," said Associate Professor, Dr. Dinh Ngoc Son, Deputy Director of the Institute of Orthopedics and Trauma, Viet Duc Hospital.
Scoliosis is quite common. The number of children with the disease accounts for 0.5-1% of the population. 80% of cases have no known cause. The rest may be due to infection, trauma, sitting in the wrong position or having vertebral deformities from the fetus (congenital).
According to Mr. Son, the disease needs to be detected early, otherwise it will severely affect the development of the spine, lungs (making children susceptible to respiratory failure), cardiovascular system, chest, digestive system...
Early detection of scoliosis in children is not too difficult, especially when children can sit and walk. Adults only need to observe carefully when children stand, especially when bathing and cleaning them.
