Prospects for sika deer farming in Cam Xuyen

After 7 months of operation, the Ngan Ha deer breeding cooperative in Cam Minh commune (Cam Xuyen) has shown clear economic efficiency. From a herd of 35 deer, the cooperative has now expanded to 44 deer. Notably, 10 male deer have been sold for velvet.

With an average weight of 5 - 6 taels/pair of antlers, selling price of about 1 million VND/tael, the cooperative has earned more than 50 million VND from selling deer antlers.

Mr. Truong Xuan Ha - representative of the Ngan Ha Sika Deer Breeding Cooperative said: "In the initial trial breeding, we found that the sika deer grew well and adapted to the soil conditions of the mountainous commune of Cam Xuyen. The goal of the cooperative is that in 3-5 years, the deer herd will increase to 100 and will be divided among members to raise in their families, thereby increasing income, contributing to agricultural restructuring associated with new rural construction".

With the effectiveness of the spotted deer breeding model in Cam Minh commune, in April 2025, Xuyen Son Production, Trade, Service and Tourism Cooperative in Cam Thinh commune (Cam Xuyen) also boldly invested about 5 billion VND to build a deer breeding farm with a scale of 140 deer. With the goal of applying high technology to breeding spotted deer, Xuyen Son Production, Trade, Service and Tourism Cooperative is gradually creating breakthroughs in agricultural production, increasing the value of deer products and opening up opportunities for sustainable economic development for people, meeting domestic consumption and export needs.

Xuyen Son Production, Trade, Service and Tourism Cooperative invested about 5 billion VND to build a deer breeding farm.

Mr. Hoang Trung Thong - Director of Xuyen Son Production, Trade, Service and Tourism Cooperative said: “Recently, some households in Cam Thinh commune have been raising deer to increase their income. After studying the soil, we found that the Tra Son area here is very suitable for replicating the model. Therefore, the Cooperative has invested in applying high technology in breeding to increase the resistance of the deer herd, reduce the risk of disease, thereby improving product quality. After successfully developing a high-quality deer breeding farm, the Cooperative will provide good breeding sources for people to develop herds in households”.

The whole Cam Xuyen district currently has about 10 models of sika deer farming with a scale of over 10 animals/batch/model, of which 2 models are owned by cooperatives and cooperative groups. Sika deer farming is not only developed in mountainous communes such as Cam Minh, Cam Thinh, Cam My... but people in coastal areas such as Thien Cam town, Cam Duong are also actively building deer herds. To encourage the development of new industries, currently, the People's Committee of Cam Xuyen district is also implementing policies to support people in the communes of Cam Quan, Cam My, Cam Son to build sika deer farming models.

Sika deer farming is suitable for mountainous communes of Cam Xuyen district.

Mr. Le Ngoc Ha - Vice Chairman of Cam Xuyen District People's Committee said: "With 37,700 hectares of mountainous area, Cam Xuyen district has great potential to develop the sika deer breeding model. This is not only a new economic development direction to increase people's income but also contributes to restructuring agriculture associated with building new rural areas. In order for deer breeding to develop sustainably, in addition to issuing support policies, the locality also promotes training, guidance on care techniques, disease prevention; organizes for households to visit and learn effective breeding models in the province; strengthens information and communication work to replicate the models".

From the initial pilot models, currently, Cam Xuyen District People's Committee is continuing to evaluate and develop deer farming in advantageous communes, especially in mountainous areas; thereby creating jobs, increasing income for local people, contributing to the goal of sustainable poverty reduction in the area.
