North Korea "will equip" its Air Force with new strategic military equipment

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on November 30 that Chairman Kim Jong-un and his daughter Kim Ju-ae arrived at Kalma Airport in Wonsan on November 28 to attend the 80th anniversary of the founding of the country's air force and witnessed various types of fighter jets performing in the sky, including the early warning aircraft that Pyongyang announced earlier this year.

"The Korean Air Force will be equipped with new strategic military equipment and assigned new important missions. The Air Force should resolutely repel and deal with any potential espionage and military provocations from the enemy," the North Korean central news agency KCNA quoted Mr. Kim as saying at the ceremony today.

Also according to KCNA, the ceremony was held at Kalma Airport of the 59th Kil Yong Jo Heroic Flying Squadron of the 2nd Air Force Wing. The North Korean leader expressed great expectations for the Air Force and emphasized the need to resolutely repel and control all espionage and provocations from outside.

Chairman Kim Jong-un also awarded the Air Force the Order of Kim Jong Il, the Northeast Asian nation's highest honor.

The North Korean Air Force is mainly equipped with Soviet-made fighters and attack aircraft. It has not yet deployed large bombers, which are important weapons in the deterrence triad of nuclear-armed countries, along with ballistic missiles and submarines.

North Korea has recently made efforts to modernize its air force. Images released by state media showed drones, mobile missile launchers and other equipment at the ceremony.

According to observers, North Korea is stepping up the modernization of its conventional military forces, including the Air Force, with the announcement of its first live-fire air-to-air drill involving military aircraft in May, in addition to introducing an early warning and control aircraft system in March./.
