“Nowadays, rice farming with 4.0 technology is very easy. Drones fertilize and spray pesticides. Record field logs with smartphones. Rice farming with 3 crops is safe, there are machines to replace farmers in most stages.
Farmers do not need to wade into the fields, when they harvest, money flows into their cards immediately", Mr. Nguyen Van Hung - Director of Thang Loi Agricultural Service Cooperative described, just leading us to the 447ha high-quality rice field in My Dong commune, Thap Muoi district ( Dong Thap ).
Farm mechanization is gradually replacing farmers in most stages of rice production, with drones replacing people in spraying pesticides and fertilizing....
Modern rice growers not only bring their thinking and knowledge into rice products, but also come from their heart and responsibility for the health of users and the living environment of the community.
The important thing is to reduce costs and increase profits.
On the roads crisscrossing the irrigation canal system and culverts running between the green rice fields, Mr. Hung said he had invested "more than 26 billion VND (from the cooperative's budget and State support) to have a relatively complete infrastructure system" to serve production, travel and convenient rice transportation.
“We are researching to strengthen the canals to reduce water loss and reduce irrigation costs during production,” said Mr. Hung, adding that the cooperative currently has 96 members, with each household having an average of at least 1.5 hectares.
Large production area is also an important condition for cooperatives to successfully implement advanced production programs.
“The application of scientific and technical advances in the fields and the linkage with consumption enterprises have been implemented very effectively by the cooperative. From there, it has created consensus and support from the people, most recently the SRP rice production model, recording production diaries.
With the experience and determination of its members, the cooperative was selected to pilot the Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice with an area of over 43 hectares. Farmers are even more excited because the criteria are not strange at all" - Mr. Hung said.
In the recent 2024 Summer-Autumn rice crop, the cooperative's model produced rice at a cost of 3,700 VND/kg, a selling price of 8,500 VND/kg, and the enterprise purchased all products at a price 100-150 VND/kg higher than the market price.
Rice yield reached 6.5-6.9 tons/ha. The model profit was 2.2 million VND/ha higher than the control. In particular, rice growers' income increased by 800,000-900,000 VND/ha from selling straw after harvest.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hung and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan - a person who is very passionate about sustainable agriculture, next to the high-quality rice field of Thang Loi Cooperative, in Hamlet 5, My Dong Commune (Thap Muoi District, Dong Thap Province).
Applying the technical process of producing high-quality and low-emission rice in the Mekong Delta region issued by the Department of Crop Production, farmers have applied mechanization in sowing (row sowing, cluster sowing combined with burying fertilizer) reducing seeds to 65-70 kg/ha, managing alternating flooding and drying, reducing the amount of fertilizer by 20-40%, reducing the number of times pesticides are sprayed, straw is collected from the fields, and enterprises have signed contracts to consume rice...
According to Mr. Hung, with the effectiveness of the model, the pilot area of 43 hectares will increase to 150 hectares in the Winter-Spring crop and aim for all 447 hectares participating in the project.
According to Mr. Hung, rice production 4.0 not only reduces costs but also supports sustainable production and minimizes environmental pollution.
For example, installing a pest warning device connected to an iPhone in the field will notify the density within a 5km radius, when to spray pesticides... From there, farmers reduce production costs, increase rice quality, increase profits, reduce environmental pollution, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
From heart and responsibility
“The initial goal of the production household was to create products that serve the interests of consumers and ensure a living environment for the community. We are primarily concerned with creating valuable products that serve health needs, not thinking about building a brand or selling at a high price,” said Mr. Doan Van Tai, Director of Tan Dat Agricultural Production and Service Cooperative (Trung Ngai Commune, Vung Liem District, Vinh Long Province). He shared his thoughts and concerns for the rice grains that have created a famous organic rice brand.
Up to now, after more than 14 years of establishment, from 6.5 hectares with 15 members, the cooperative has built a 100-hectare raw material area for organic rice cultivation with 65 members participating in production.
Of which, about 30 hectares are certified organic according to 4 leading international standards including USDA (USA), EU (Europe), JAS (Japan) and COR (Canada) with the main rice varieties being fragrant rice ST24, Dai Thom 8, OM4900 and Tan Dat herbal purple rice.
From the reality of high production costs, unstable output, while the rice-growing soil environment is contaminated with toxic chemical residues, causing pollution.
With Mr. Tai’s guidance, the cooperative has embarked on organic rice cultivation. This is a rice production process associated with the use of clean water, organic fertilizers and pesticides, aiming to create rice products with high nutritional content and minimize the content of harmful substances.
Based on the advantages of the rice land, the members are farmers with experience in rice cultivation and have favorable field infrastructure, so the cooperative boldly produces rice in an advanced, environmentally friendly way. That is organic production and has been successful.
According to Mr. Tai, thanks to safe and organic production, the implementation of the 1 million hectare high-quality rice project has certain advantages for the cooperative. “Before implementing the project, I directly participated in digital transformation training courses and applied software in production.
At the same time, training is provided for key members of the cooperative to grasp the technology. In 2025, the cooperative registered to implement the project with an area of 350 hectares in 3 rice crops. Currently, the cooperative has almost completed the conditions to implement the project, and is completing the pumping station to put into use in the next crop season," said Mr. Tai.
The project of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice is a major policy, expected to create a major change for Vietnam's rice industry.
“The goal of the cooperative has always been to create safe, quality products while protecting the environment. For many years, the cooperative has done so and is continuing to follow this guideline.
Each month, the market is supplied with 15-20 tons of products, but it is still not enough to meet market demand. Only when the cooperative is profitable, has the right direction, and is successful can it attract more farmers to join the cooperative. From there, a larger, more sustainable production area will be formed," Mr. Tai shared.
Producing high-quality, low-emission rice and applying 4.0 technology to the fields essentially reduces investment levels, which means increasing profits for farmers.
The implementation of the project will change the entire production method, bringing many benefits to farmers, not only increasing economic efficiency, reducing costs but most importantly protecting health and the environment.
With digital and automated solutions in all stages from production, management to consumption, the appearance of footprint-free fields - which many cooperative directors are cherishing - will not be far away.
