Coffee prices fell slightly on Wednesday as the US dollar index rose to a four-month high, which weighed on most commodities, including coffee. The US dollar index rose 1.64% to 105.1 points, its highest level in four months, as the US presidential election results named Donald Trump as the 47th president of the United States.

Coffee losses were contained due to concerns that unusual conditions in Brazil could limit the country's coffee output.

According to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (VICOFA), in the 2023-2024 crop year, Vietnam exported coffee to the Hungarian market with the highest price, up to 7,886 USD/ton, followed by the Israeli market with a price of 6,061 USD/ton, Poland 5,699 USD/ton and the Lao market 5,155 USD/ton.

Coffee export prices in these markets are particularly high compared to the general average of 3,792 USD/ton.

The reason is that these markets mainly import processed and instant coffee products, so the value is high. Last year, Vietnam's green coffee exports had a record high price of 3,524/ton, while processed coffee had an average price of up to 5,507 USD/ton.

Rains in key coffee-producing regions in October facilitated crop flowering, raising producers' expectations for the 2025-2026 crop, according to the Agricultural Research Agency of the University of Sao Paulo (CEPEA, Brazil).

However, many coffee growers remain concerned about the development of flowers, due to the fact that coffee trees have been affected by high temperatures and lack of rain for nearly six months in some areas.

Producers need to focus on crop care. But for flowers to thrive, rains need to continue, otherwise the flowers may fall, leading to more significant losses next season.

The 2023-24 crop failure, high prices and low yields have led to a high rate of sales this year, leaving inventories tight, raising concerns about coffee supplies until Brazil’s next crop.

Vietnam’s robusta coffee harvest could help ease price pressure, but the smaller output may not be enough to restore global coffee supplies in the long term.
