First introduced at Beijing Children's Hospital in February 2025, the AI-powered pediatrician model will soon be deployed in many primary hospitals in China.

Last week, the hospital launched a pediatric AI doctor model called "Futang Baichuan" which includes two AI-powered applications, a basic version and an expert version in pediatrics.

The apps will be deployed in medical centers and community hospitals across Beijing, as well as more than 150 county hospitals in neighboring Hebei province, according to the developers.

China's first AI pediatrician was officially launched on February 20 at Beijing Children's Hospital, acting as a clinical research assistant to help doctors quickly access the latest scientific findings and authoritative guidelines, supporting the diagnosis and treatment of complex and rare diseases.

The AI system integrates the clinical expertise of more than 300 renowned pediatricians in the hospital, along with decades of high-quality medical record data from these experts.

Through structured clinical reasoning model training, the system has established a comprehensive knowledge system covering both common and complex pediatric diseases.

A multi-specialist medical team, along with an AI pediatrician, consulted with 10 children with complex medical conditions. As the team discussed, engineers entered the patients’ medical records into the AI system.

The system then recommends a treatment plan, surgery, and chemotherapy that aligns with the expert panel’s opinion. Sometimes, the system highlights specific metrics in the patient’s report, providing additional insights that help improve the treatment plan.

The basic version targets daily pediatric care, empowering clinicians at the grassroots level, while the expert version handles complex and rare diseases to improve decision-making efficiency, said Ni Xin, director of Beijing Children's Hospital.

For example, the basic version can distinguish early symptoms of viral encephalitis, which is often mistaken for the common cold, thereby promoting timely testing and reducing the risk of misdiagnosis.

The model was developed by the hospital in collaboration with two technology companies, Baichuan AI and Xiaoerfang. The project aims to promote pediatric AI models and expand equitable access to high-quality pediatric healthcare through advanced technologies./.
