On May 29, in Hanoi , Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan visited and presented gifts to 70 child patients being treated at the Central Lung Hospital on the occasion of International Children's Day, June 1.

At the Pediatrics Department, the VicePresident kindly asked about the health of the children and listened to the medical team share about the circumstances, treatment process and efforts to overcome the illness of each child patient.

Directly meeting and encouraging the children, the Vice President expressed his emotion at the stories of determination of the sick children and their families in their journey to fight the disease; sent his best wishes for the children to recover soon, always live in the arms of love, care and continue to excel in their studies and life.

Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan congratulated the hospital on its important achievements and affirmed that it is a source of pride and a solid foundation for the hospital to continue to conquer higher goals in the career of caring for and protecting people's health.

In particular, the Central Lung Hospital successfully performed two consecutive lung transplants within just one week in April 2025, an important milestone, demonstrating the great progress of the hospital as well as the Vietnamese medical sector in the field of organ transplantation. This is not only a medical achievement, but also opens up hope of life for many seriously ill people across the country.

The Vice President emphasized that child health care is an investment in the country's future. Currently, diseases are increasingly unpredictable and constantly changing, posing challenges to the medical industry, requiring us not to be subjective.

Meanwhile, socio-economic conditions between regions are still disparate, and many localities still face difficulties. People's living habits, health care awareness and medical knowledge are still limited, especially in remote areas. Polluted environment, dirty food and fake food continue to directly affect public health, especially children.

Although the health system has made strong progress, some areas such as preventive medicine and primary health care are still inadequate and people do not have full access.

Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan hopes that the medical team and the entire health sector will deeply understand their sacred mission in order to develop specific and effective action strategies.

It is necessary to strengthen disease forecasting and understand the current health status of the people in order to have short-term and long-term health care strategies, especially for children - the future generation.

The health sector needs to proactively advise the Party and the State to perfect institutions and policies in line with reality and development, ensuring universal health care. At the same time, it is necessary to respect and spread examples and achievements in the medical career, continuing the tradition and learning from predecessors such as Dr. Pham Ngoc Thach, who devoted his whole life to the country's medicine.

According to the Vice President, scientific research needs to continue to be promoted, experience sharing and technology transfer, especially in the field of organ transplantation, so that more and more hospitals can perform this technique, bringing life chances to more patients.

The medical staff needs to constantly learn, improve their expertise and techniques, and maintain medical ethics with patients. Modernizing the hospital management model, applying digital transformation, and enhancing connectivity throughout the system are necessary to create a new look for the healthcare industry.

Invest in building modern hospitals, commensurate with the capacity of doctors to integrate internationally, gradually moving towards a medical tourism model, welcoming patients from countries in the region to Vietnam for treatment.

For the National Tuberculosis Control Program, it is necessary to develop a specific strategy to effectively prevent and control the disease in difficult areas such as remote areas, the Southwest, and border areas, especially in children - vulnerable groups at risk of severe sequelae.

Improve the ability to detect tuberculosis early in children, because the detection rate is still very low. Improve treatment regimens to reduce sequelae, help children after treatment to be healthy, capable of studying, working, and contributing to society.

At the same time, it is necessary to research treatment regimens that optimize treatment time and costs, helping patients recover quickly and reducing the financial burden on families and society, the Vice President noted.

Reporting on the hospital's performance, Dr. Dinh Van Luong, Director of the Central Lung Hospital and Head of the National Tuberculosis Control Program, said that the hospital had successfully completed its 2024 plan with more than 102,000 medical examinations, nearly 41,000 inpatient treatments, and nearly 5,000 successful surgeries.

The Department of Pediatrics, with 65 years of development, plays the role of the final line in the treatment of pediatric tuberculosis, detecting and treating 250-300 pediatric tuberculosis cases/year, mainly severe and complicated cases. In 2024, the department received 14,405 examinations and treatments.

The hospital has also successfully performed 7 lung transplants, achieving 100% success rate, opening up opportunities for many patients to survive. The lung cancer treatment process meets international standards.

The supply of medicine and medical supplies is fully guaranteed, with no shortages.

Regarding the National Tuberculosis Control Program, the Central Lung Hospital is the unit that presides over and effectively implements proactive detection and treatment activities.

However, diagnosing childhood TB remains difficult. Only about 1,000-1,300 cases are reported each year, accounting for less than 20% of the estimate.

However, in 2024, the National Tuberculosis Control Program achieved its highest results ever with more than 103,000 cases detected, 70.3% with bacterial evidence, and a treatment success rate of over 90%.

On this occasion, Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan presented gifts to 6 patients who recently received successful lung transplants./.
