According to Xinhua, during a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Beijing, President Xi Jinping assessed that the two sides had made progress and reached consensus on some specific issues. "I hope that through this visit, you will make more positive contributions to stabilizing China-US relations," Xi told Blinken. This was the first meeting between Xi and a US secretary of state since 2018, taking place on the second and final day of Blinken's trip to China, according to Reuters.
President Xi Jinping meets with Secretary of State Blinken in Beijing on June 19.
Before meeting Xi, Blinken held three hours of talks with Wang Yi, Reuters reported, citing several US State Department officials. "We must choose between dialogue and confrontation, cooperation and conflict. We must reverse the downward spiral of China-US relations, push them back to a healthy and stable path, and jointly find the right path for China and the US to get along," China Central Television (CCTV) quoted Wang as telling Blinken. Wang urged the US to stop speculating about threats from China and not interfere in its internal affairs.
Regarding the Taiwan issue, Mr. Wang emphasized: "China has no room for compromise or concessions." Previously, Chinese media reported that in a meeting with Secretary of State Blinken on June 18, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang "pointed out that the Taiwan issue is at the core of China's core interests, the most important issue in China-US relations and the most prominent risk." Mr. Blinken emphasized "the need to reduce the risk of misunderstanding and miscalculation," according to the US State Department .
Mr. Blinken met Mr. Qin for more than 7.5 hours on June 18. Washington described the two sides as having "candid" and "constructive" talks. However, the two sides did not appear to have made concrete progress on disputes such as Taiwan, trade and human rights , according to Reuters.
US officials and analysts expect Blinken’s visit to Beijing to pave the way for more bilateral meetings in the coming months, according to Reuters. Blinken’s visit could also set the stage for meetings between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping at multilateral summits later this year.
