TPO - Believing that this year's Math exam will have many new points and questions with challenging situations for students, Mr. Tran Manh Tung, a Math teacher in Hanoi, shared the secret to getting a score of 10 in Math in the 10th grade high school entrance exam.

In the 10th grade entrance exam in Hanoi , candidates will take the Math exam on the morning of June 8. The test time is 120 minutes.

According to teacher Tran Manh Tung, to get high scores, candidates need to pay attention to the following contents:

Master the exam structure

2025 is the first year that 9th graders study according to the new curriculum and textbooks. Accordingly, the Math exam for 10th graders also has many new points such as: Probability, statistics, interest rate problems, many practical problems, and spatial geometry problems are also more difficult.

According to Mr. Tung, this year's exam is more challenging for candidates than the exam of the 2006 General Education Program.

The test usually consists of 5 essay questions and is more focused on assessing mathematical ability, rather than requiring mechanical calculations. Students need to have a solid grasp of the knowledge, know how to apply it, and have good test-taking skills to achieve high scores.

Candidates need good reading comprehension skills.

When receiving the test, candidates need to spend 5 minutes to read the test carefully, understand it and then do it.

Students underline key words, write notes or solutions next to them, and connect the problem of that lesson with any knowledge, skills or formulas in Math.

After reading the questions, candidates should plan their test-taking strategy: Do the easy questions first, then the more difficult ones. It is not necessary to do the test in the order of the questions. After reading the questions and planning the order of the test, candidates should allocate time for each part appropriately.

Candidates should cherish every precious minute to do the test and should bring a watch to check the time accurately. While doing the test, you need to increase your speed and mental calculation, do not overuse the calculator because if you use the calculator for every calculation, it means you are struggling with simple calculations.

Candidates should not spend too much time on sketching. Sketches should only be drawn by hand and only when given direction should they start working on the test in time. If they find a mistake, they should calmly cross it out and continue.

The test must present complete ideas, be easy to read, be scientific , and have strong arguments.

Always have the habit of checking the changes and calculations right after doing the test, not waiting until the end of the test. Candidates should not do it carelessly or in a hurry.

Mathematicalization of real-world situations

One of the issues that Mr. Tung emphasized to the candidates is that this year's Math exam has many real-life situations and this will be a big challenge. Therefore, candidates need to read the exam carefully and determine what is given and what needs to be found as well as the relationship between those quantities.

Clearly identify which part or formula of Math the situation is associated with. Use Math to solve it; Compare the conditions, requirements and draw conclusions.

Pick up even the smallest points

In case of difficult questions, candidates should not give up but instead find a way to solve each idea to collect points. Each idea will be awarded points.

“If you have to use a property that you haven’t proven yet, then just use it; if you have to use a sentence that you haven’t been able to prove yet to do the next sentence, then just use it normally. Fight until the 120th minute, don’t surrender, don’t sit around before the end of the test,” said Mr. Tung.

In addition, at the end of each test, candidates need to clearly state the answer and conclusion. The conclusion must confirm that the question has been answered correctly. The conclusion must be clear to help the examiner and the student not lose points.

Candidates also need to avoid mistakes that can easily lose points.

During the process of teaching and reviewing for final year students, Mr. Tung has drawn conclusions about the mistakes students often make and advised candidates.

Summary: Candidates often make errors in reduction and transformation.

Problem solving by setting up equations: Error in units, setting up conditions, reasoning; setting up the wrong equation; misunderstanding the hypothesis.

Spatial geometry: Rounding errors, drawing errors, incorrect formulas

System of equations: Missing or incorrect conditions; not comparing solutions with conditions; incorrect calculator.

Picture exercise: Didn't read the question carefully, drew the wrong picture, misunderstood.

Real-life problem: Off topic, not considering real-life conditions.

Calculation errors: Wrong sign, wrong side transposition, wrong exponent, wrong formula, wrong calculator, wrong unit...

Presentation errors: Avoid sloppy, unclear, incomplete, or unsubstantiated presentations. Using methods outside the program. Using incorrect or arbitrary symbols or skipping steps, skipping steps, or unclear erasures... are reasons for losing points.

Finally, to do well on the test, candidates need to be calm and confident, they will have a 50% chance of winning. If you are stressed, you can take a breather after 1-2 minutes, regain your optimism and determination to read the questions carefully and focus on doing the test.
