Which plans and subject combinations need to be adjusted to ensure adherence to the Ministry of Education and Training's direction? In particular, closely following the 2018 generaleducation program to ensure the rights of candidates has been and is being considered and selected by universities.
Difficulties in career guidance
From 2025, the high school graduation exam will have 4 subjects. Of which, 2 subjects are compulsory: Math and Literature; 2 subjects students choose from the remaining subjects, including: Foreign Language, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, Technology.
At this time, many high schools have organized surveys for 12th grade students to choose the remaining two subjects. The survey shows that students do not choose or very rarely choose the subjects of Information Technology, Technology, Economic Education and Law. Leaders of some high schools shared that currently, schools are facing difficulties in career guidance for students; proposed to strengthen the connection between universities and high schools in terms of specialized counseling to help students make appropriate choices.
At Nguyen Hue High School (Thai Binh), students do not choose the two subjects Technology and Informatics. At Hung Vuong High School (Dak Lak), almost no students choose Informatics and Technology. At Viet Duc High School ( Hanoi ), most students only choose traditional subjects as before to review, not many new subjects.
According to Ms. Nguyen Boi Quynh - Principal of Viet Duc High School, such a choice is understandable because students need data from previous exams to orient themselves. It is possible that in the following school years, when schools have enrollment plans, students will decide to choose new exam subjects.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hoan, Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade: 2025 is the first year that students studying the 2018 general education program will take the graduation exam. This is not only a concern and worry for high school students and teachers, but also a concern for universities.
The construction of subject combinations in the admission process must ensure that students have the basic knowledge when entering university in each specific field, while also being compatible and suitable for the diverse choices of students. The school is also in the process of building and making some adjustments to the 2025 admission plan, which will be announced soon so that candidates can understand clearly. The school affirms its commitment to supporting career guidance and admission work and accompanying high schools, candidates and parents in choosing suitable careers.
Recently, nearly 800 students had a day of experience at the University of Natural Sciences, VNU, Hanoi, attending the “HUS Open Day” and “HUS Orientation Day”. This time, there were 580 students from Bac Duyen Ha High School (Hung Ha District, Thai Binh Province) and 350 students from the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences, VNU, Hanoi.
Dr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Head of Student Affairs Department, University of Science, VNU Hanoi said: “HUS Open Day” and “HUS Orientation Day” are important activities to help students know their training professions and choose the majors they will pursue. These activities help students understand and love the field of natural sciences and have the right orientation when choosing a career, major, etc. Through these activities, the school and teachers grasp the thoughts and aspirations of students, thereby contributing to the ministries and branches to build appropriate policies on many issues of professions, training, and recruitment of human resources to serve the economic and social development of the country.
Expected changes in enrollment
Regarding the Draft "2025 Admission Plan of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade", Dr. Nguyen Van Kha, Deputy Director of the School's Admissions and Communications Center, shared: The school will consider admission according to 5 methods: Method 1, results of the 2025 high school graduation exam; Method 2, high school study results (5 semesters); Method 3, results of the capacity assessment exam of Ho Chi Minh City National University; Method 4, direct admission and priority for direct admission according to the Project; Method 5, results of the specialized capacity assessment exam of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education combined with high school study results.
Emphasizing that in the context of digital transformation and knowledge-based economic development, the need for high-quality human resources is becoming increasingly urgent, Dr. Nguyen Van Kha said that the school always strives to accompany students and parents in the journey of choosing a suitable career, meeting the needs of the modern labor market. The school plans to reserve 50%-60% of the admission quota based on the 2025 high school graduation exam scores. Notably, the school has reduced the quota for considering high school study results according to 5 semesters to 15%-20% and increased the quota for considering the competency assessment exam scores of Ho Chi Minh City National University and the specialized competency assessment exam scores of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education.
At Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, one of the important changes in the school's 2025 enrollment plan is to adjust the admission combinations to match the high school graduation exam subjects, while maintaining the admission combinations of 2024. The school will adjust the combinations that are no longer suitable, such as eliminating combinations with Natural Science and Social Science exams... and adding new combinations with Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, and Technology.
According to MSc. Nguyen Ngoc Trung, Vice Principal of the school, the changes in the school's enrollment for the next school year are to meet the needs of students studying under the 2018 General Education Program. The school plans not to use high school academic results (report cards) for enrollment, only retaining the threshold conditions to ensure input quality to meet the requirements according to the enrollment regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training; the school is oriented to use the Specialized Competency Assessment exam as the main method (accounting for 40%-50% of the target)...
Vietnam-Germany University also plans to allow candidates to freely choose subjects in groups of majors to register for admission. Candidates are not limited in choosing subjects, but can be flexible depending on their orientation and interests. For example, in the method of considering high school academic scores, the school considers admission based on the average score of 6 subjects according to the results of 3 years of high school. Of which, engineering and technology majors consider 4 compulsory subjects (Math, Physics, Literature, Foreign Language) and 2 elective subjects (Chemistry, Biology, Informatics, Technology, History and Geography). Economics and management majors consider the average score of 3 compulsory subjects (Math, Literature, Foreign Language) and 3 elective subjects from the remaining subjects.
