From research to policy consultation on socio-economic development

In mid-March 2025, the University of Economics (University of Danang) organized a workshop to announce the Annual Report on the economic situation of Danang city in 2024 with the theme "Da Nang City - Improving competitiveness for sustainable development". This is the third consecutive year that the school has carried out this activity, contributing to consulting, building and criticizing policies, serving the socio-economic development of Danang in particular, and the development of the region and the country in general.

According to experts, the annual report is an opportunity for scientists , policy makers, and researchers to discuss, exchange, analyze in depth, and evaluate Da Nang's competitiveness through three main pillars: economic position, business resources, and institutions.

The annual economic report forecasts, consults, and proposes important strategic directions for the city to study and implement in 2025 and the coming time, such as: building Da Nang into an international-scale urban area, closely associated with Vietnamese cultural identity and the brand of a green, livable city; restructuring the economy with a focus on high-quality services, digital technology and developing highly qualified human resources; building and developing the Da Nang free trade zone and regional international financial center; strengthening regional connectivity and international integration; developing high technology and industry 4.0; perfecting modern institutions, promoting sustainable development through administrative reform and specific mechanisms; promoting green economic development, adapting to climate change, prioritizing renewable energy and environmentally friendly solutions, etc.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Le Van Huy, Principal of the University of Economics, the school has just organized a seminar on "Challenges in data collection and policy formulation for the development of free trade zones in Da Nang (FTZ)" with the participation of domestic and international experts.

Prof. Tobias Kuhnimhof from RWTH Aachen University (Germany) shared international experience in planning free trade zones, especially the important role of data in building sustainable development strategies. In addition, Prof. Tobias Kuhnimhof, together with international experts such as Prof. Mario Cools, University of Liège (Belgium), experts from the University of Sydney (Australia), experts from the Washington Metropolitan Council of Governments (USA)... discussed and analyzed the practical case of the FTZ project in Da Nang from the perspective of strategy, law, infrastructure and performance indicators (KPIs), shared experience in collecting and processing data, contributing to the application in Da Nang's reality in the sustainable development strategy.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Huy said that, along with undertaking the training of high-quality human resources, the University of Economics also proactively and actively coordinates with the city's departments, branches and sectors to train knowledge about international financial centers for staff and civil servants. According to Ms. Tran Thi Thanh Tam, Director of the Department of Finance, these are activities to concretize the implementation of the policy of building Da Nang into a financial center, associated with innovation, logistics and free trade. At the same time, it is a step to support the systematization of knowledge, raise awareness and thinking about management, operation and legal models, with reference to international experience in the development trend of digital finance, digital assets and financial technology (fintech), applied to the practice of Da Nang city.
