Self-practice physical therapy at home, patient with muscle atrophy in both legs

On May 17, news from Hoan My Cuu Long General Hospital said that the hospital's doctors had successfully treated a patient who was doing physical therapy at home, causing muscle atrophy in both legs.

Previously, patient NTCT (39 years old, residing in Cai Rang District, Can Tho City) was treated with hip replacement. Before being discharged from the hospital, Ms. T. was advised on a physical therapy treatment plan at the hospital. However, when she returned home, Ms. T. practiced on her own, without the guidance and supervision of medical staff.

After 2 weeks of treatment, the muscle atrophy improved, the patient was consulted and carefully instructed by the doctor about physical therapy exercises.

After 2 weeks of practicing at home, Ms. T. felt that her legs were weak and had muscle atrophy, she could not close her hip joints, had a lot of pain and had difficulty walking, so she went to Hoan My Cuu Long General Hospital for examination.

After examination, the doctor diagnosed Ms. T. with sequelae of lower limb injury and prescribed outpatient treatment with electrical stimulation, muscle strengthening exercises, exercises to regain hip range of motion, and gait correction for 6 weeks.

After 2 weeks of treatment and physical therapy at the hospital, Ms. T's leg muscle atrophy improved and her hip joint was partially closed.

According to the doctor's advice and assessment, Ms. T. needs to persevere in practicing for about 3 more weeks to achieve the goal of closing the hip joint, muscle strength reaching 4/5 and gait will be almost normal.
