(Fatherland) - On February 1 (the 4th day of the Lunar New Year), Dong Ky ward, Tu Son city, Bac Ninh province organized the Dong Ky Fireworks Festival for the Year of the Snake 2025, attracting thousands of people and tourists from all over.
On the 4th day of Tet, people of Dong Ky village (now Dong Ky ward, Tu Son city, Bac Ninh province) and tourists from all over excitedly held a firecracker festival, praying for a prosperous year and good luck.
The highlight of the Dong Ky fireworks festival is the pair of giant wooden cannons, respectfully called "firecrackers" by the locals. Each "firecracker" weighs approximately one ton.
Fireworks were carried from the traditional house to Dong Ky communal house.
Dong Ky Fireworks Festival (Dong Quang Commune, Tu Son) was recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2016.
The festival is held according to traditional rituals, consisting of 2 parts: the ceremony and the festival. The procession part has the participation of more than 1,000 people including lion dance teams, large and small music groups, worshiping objects, flags, gongs, drums, palanquins, fireworks, the first and second fireworks....
The two firecrackers in the procession are symbolically made of wood and gilded with gold. The first firecracker is 6 meters long and the second is 5.8 meters long, with a diameter of more than 1 meter.
The body of the cannon is carved with the image of Dragon-Unicorn-Turtle-Phoenix with the wish for a new year of favorable weather and wind.
Dong Ky fireworks procession attracts many young people and foreign tourists.
Each firecracker was carried by young people in the village from the Dong Ky village cultural house to the communal house yard for the ceremony.
The festival is associated with the legend of Saint Thien Cuong who went to fight the Xich Quy bandits. According to folklore, during the Hung King's reign, there was a man named Cuong Cong, son of Kinh Bac district king, who had the merit of defeating the Xich Quy bandits and was given the title Thien Cuong by the king. On the way to defeat the bandits, Thien Cuong went to Dong Ky to recruit soldiers and choose generals.
The unique feature of this festival is the Do Ong ceremony.
Young men aged 18 and over from families in Dong Ky ward participated in supporting the four funeral officials performing in the communal house yard.
The four funeral officials were cheered on high by shirtless young men in shorts. Below, the young men jostled and pushed each other, and the official who could stand the longest was the winner.
This is a ritual to recall the story of Saint Thien Cuong choosing a vanguard general to defeat the enemy.
The festival includes many exciting cultural, artistic and sports activities such as volleyball, chess, bonsai contest, quan ho singing on boats, tuong singing, chau van singing...
The procession was carried on the arms of young men in the village, and as they marched, they cheered, creating a bustling atmosphere, recreating the scene of the ancient army's departure.
The "Do ong dam" ceremony is a way to promote martial spirit, an occasion for young men to show off their health and muscular beauty. This custom also has the meaning of soldiers carrying their generals in front of the army on the day of victory to celebrate.
Dong Ky Fireworks Festival is one of 15 national intangible cultural heritages recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2016.
