Da Lat railway line

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên23/11/2023

On November 22nd, the People's Committee of Lam Dong province announced that it had sent a document to the Ministry of Transport and the Vietnam Railway Authority requesting consideration and direction for relevant units to promptly invest in and upgrade the infrastructure of the Da Lat - Trai Mat railway line. This aims to ensure train safety, attract tourists to Da Lat city in particular and Lam Dong province in general, and create conditions for Lam Dong province to achieve the goals of Resolution No. 04-NQ/TU (dated November 12, 2021) of the Standing Committee of the Lam Dong Provincial Party Committee (11th term) on the development of Da Lat city in the period 2021-2025, with orientation to 2030 and vision to 2045.

Da Lat Railway Station National Monument

The Da Lat - Trai Mat railway line, built during the French colonial era, was restored in 1991 (including 6.7 km of main track; 0.81 km of station track; 9 switches and 380m of culverts) as part of the Thap Cham - Da Lat railway restoration project.

However, inspections by relevant authorities have revealed that the Da Lat - Trai Mat railway line is currently in a very serious state of disrepair. Some sections are experiencing localized flooding and landslides, as well as sewage and garbage, posing a safety hazard and significantly impacting tourists and local residents.

A section of the Da Lat - Trai Mat railway line passes through a residential area.

Specifically, the route has many continuous curves, and none of these curves have guardrails; the route passes through high mountainous areas with relatively steep longitudinal slopes, especially the steep section before Trai Mat station (Da Lat - Trai Mat direction).

The current railway embankment is approximately 5 meters wide, with many sections having deep excavations and raised embankments. The railway corridor is mostly hilly and mountainous, and during heavy rains, water from the hillsides flows down onto the railway embankment, carrying soil and rocks, causing flooding of 20-50 cm and significantly impacting train operations.

Trai Mat Station

The rails are mainly P26, L = 12m, on concrete sleepers interspersed with worn and damaged French-made steel sleepers. The average sleeper density is 16 sleepers per 12m long rail bridge. The switches are worn beyond standard specifications, and there are no replacement parts. There are no bridges along the entire route, only 19 culverts for drainage. Currently, some sections on both sides of the route have longitudinal drainage ditches, and some have transverse drainage ditches, but most are buried under soil and rocks, resulting in frequent localized flooding.

Along the Da Lat - Trai Mat railway line, there are still many ancient architectural structures, especially Da Lat station, the oldest railway station in Indochina (recognized as a national cultural architectural monument in 2001); in addition, related station buildings such as warehouses, locomotive and carriage storage facilities, and locomotive repair and inspection tunnels have also deteriorated.
