At the meeting to review the socio -economic situation of Ho Chi Minh City in the first 5 months of the year on June 3, Mr. Tran Quang Lam, Acting Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, provided new information related to the Metro line project connecting the inner city to Can Gio district.
According to the acting Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, if everything goes smoothly, the Metro line could start construction in early 2026.
According to Mr. Lam, Vingroup is speeding up the research and preparation of a project proposal under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. The project will use the company’s own capital and mobilize additional capital from other legal sources, without using the state budget. In case the proposal is not approved, the company will bear all research costs and related risks.
The Acting Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction said that if everything goes smoothly, the Metro line could start construction in early 2026. He also noted that investors must ensure the quality of their documents and complete content in accordance with legal regulations.
The Metro project connecting the center of Ho Chi Minh City with Can Gio district has a total length of about 48.7km, is a high-speed urban railway, entirely elevated, standard gauge 1,435mm, double track design, maximum speed up to 250km/h. The total estimated investment is about 102,370 billion VND, equivalent to 4.09 billion USD.
When completed, the Metro line will help shorten the travel time from Phu My Hung urban area (District 7) to Can Gio district to about 16 minutes. The project is expected to serve 30,000 - 40,000 passengers per hour in each direction, with two depots located in District 7 ( Binh Thuan ward, 20ha) and Long Hoa commune, Can Gio district (39ha).

The route starts from Nguyen Van Linh Street (between Nguyen Thi Thap and Ly Phuc Man intersections), runs along the median strip, turns left at Nguyen Luong Bang intersection, continues along Highway 15B, D1, crosses Rach Dia Bridge, passes Hong Linh and Van Phat Hung resettlement areas (Nha Be). After crossing the Soai Rap River, the Metro line runs parallel to Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway, then turns onto Rung Sac Street, ending at the center of Can Gio.
The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has identified this as one of the key infrastructure projects, playing an important role in promoting the development of the Can Gio coastal tourism urban area of over 2,870 hectares - a strategic project invested by Vingroup.
