According to CNN, the blue tick has disappeared from the accounts of famous people on social media platforms such as Kim Kardashian, Beyonce, billionaire Bill Gates, Pope Francis, former US President Donald Trump and Twitter founder Jack Dorsey.
Even the official accounts of some government agencies, such as Citizenship and Immigration Services and state Customs and Border Protection offices, have had their blue badges removed. Nor will they be immediately replaced with the gray badges reserved for government use.
Earlier, billionaire Elon Musk responded to a tweet citing The Verge 's reporting that basketball player Lebron James did not pay for Twitter ticks but still appeared. He said he is currently paying for some Twitter Blue subscriptions.
Football star Cristiano Ronaldo and singer Justin Bieber have lost their Twitter blue ticks
The sudden change could create a risk of celebrity impersonation and confusion about the authenticity of information on the Twitter platform. One government agency tweeted, “Although we lost the checkmark, this is the official Twitter account. Beware of impersonating accounts.” Several celebrities have begun tweeting that they plan to leave the platform.
Twitter previously said it would “begin to wind down” blue checks issued under its old verification system — which emphasized protecting high-profile users from impersonation — on April 1. To get verified, Musk said, users would have to pay $8 a month to join the platform’s Twitter Blue subscription service.
The social network with the bird logo has also removed the tick of The New York Times , a newspaper that Mr. Musk has repeatedly criticized.
