The free foreign exchange market continues to witness a "hot" increase in the USD/VND exchange rate. Currently, foreign exchange points in the free market are listing the USD price at 26,405 VND (buy) and 26,505 VND (sell), down 5 VND for buying and up 15 VND for selling, compared to the previous trading session.
On the official trading channel, due to the April 30-May 1 holiday, the central exchange rate remains unchanged at 24,956 VND/USD, which is also the rate announced by the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) before the holiday on April 19.
Commercial banks have suspended foreign exchange transactions during the holiday, making the free market the main trading channel at this time.
It is worth noting that the strong increase in the domestic USD occurred in the context of the greenback in the international market being at a low level.
The USD Index - a measure of the strength of the USD compared to a basket of six other major currencies - is currently fluctuating around 100.30 points, down sharply from early April. This situation reflects the relative weakness of the USD in the global market, in the context of the US Federal Reserve (Fed) signaling to maintain the current interest rate level and pressure from weak economic data.
