Meanwhile, in the US market, the US Dollar Index (DXY) measuring the greenback's fluctuations against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF) increased by 0.12% to 103.11.

The US dollar had a quiet trading session during the US Independence Day holiday, while it fell slightly against the Japanese yen, as the market remained on high alert for signs of Japanese government intervention in the yen.

Market activity was relatively quiet as the US was closed for the July 4th Independence Day holiday. Investors were also awaiting the US non- farm payrolls report due on July 7, which could influence the next policy decisions of the US Federal Reserve (Fed).

“It seems like every week there is some data coming out for the market, and this week we are looking at the US non-farm payrolls,” said Alvin Tan, head of Asia foreign exchange strategy at RBC Capital Markets.

The greenback fell 0.18% against the Japanese yen to 144.44 yen, after rising 0.27% earlier in the week. However, the yen remained near last week's nearly eight-month low of 145.07 per dollar, which prompted Japanese Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki to warn against excessive selling. Across currency markets, investors are still watching for potential intervention by Japanese authorities to stem the yen's slide.

In contrast, the euro fell 0.15% against the dollar, at $1.089, while the pound rose 0.18%, currently at $1.271.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) kept interest rates unchanged at 4.10% on July 4, saying it wanted more time to assess the impact of previous rate hikes, but warned further tightening may be needed to curb inflation.
