Developments in Japanese Yen exchange rate on the international market

The Japanese Yen has been on a tear as global financial markets have been rocked by rising trade tensions between the US and China. USD/JPY ended the week at 142.895, its lowest level since September last year, reflecting capital flows into safe-haven assets like the yen.

The news that US President Donald Trump agreed to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to discuss trade, along with a pledge to suspend some tariffs for 90 days, helped support market sentiment and strengthen the yen’s position. Meanwhile, the weakening of the US dollar further boosted the JPY’s appeal in the international market.

Yen exchange rate trend forecast

US President Donald Trump’s agreement to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to discuss trade, along with the US Treasury Secretary’s statement that Japan is likely to be given priority in tariff negotiations, has fueled expectations of a bilateral deal – thereby supporting the rise of the Japanese Yen (JPY).

The change in market sentiment also reflects the JPY’s enduring defensive role, despite the Bank of Japan’s (BoJ) prolonged ultra-loose monetary policy. Notably, expectations that the BoJ will continue its path of raising interest rates – amid rising base wages at many Japanese companies – have helped the Yen maintain its stable foundation.

In addition, the interest rate differential between the Fed and the BoJ is gradually narrowing, reducing the appeal of carry trade strategies. If this trend continues, the Yen is likely to not only stabilize but also maintain its recovery momentum in the medium term.
