Hanoi: The competition rate for 7 classes at the Foreign Language Specialized High School ranges from 1/5 to 1/8, a sharp decrease compared to last year's rate of 1/8 to 1/15.
According to statistics on the evening of May 5 from the Foreign Language Specialized High School, University of Foreign Languages, Hanoi National University, 2,785 candidates registered for the 10th grade exam this year, a decrease of 1,200 compared to last year.
The English class is overwhelming with 1,526 applicants. However, with a quota of 315, this is the class with the lowest competition ratio - 1/4.8, meaning that a candidate must compete with nearly five other students to win a place in the school. Last year, the competition ratio for the English class was 1/10.3.
The Russian class received the fewest applications, only 86, but because it only accepts 15 students, the competition rate to get into this class is still higher than the English class at 1/5.73.
Each of the remaining classes received between 198 and 276 applications. With 25 students, the French and Korean classes had the highest competition ratio of around 8, but that was only about half of last year’s 1/15.2. The Chinese, German, and Japanese classes had competition ratios of around 1/6.
The school notes that candidates cannot change their application. Candidates who submit multiple applications must confirm their exam class only on the morning of the exam registration.
This year, the Foreign Language High School will recruit 500 students and hold an entrance exam on the morning of June 3. Candidates will have to take three exams to assess their abilities in Foreign Language, Mathematics and Natural Sciences , Literature and Social Sciences. The exam structure remains unchanged from last year.
In the Foreign Language Proficiency Test, candidates will have 90 minutes to complete 60 multiple-choice questions and one essay question. Candidates can choose to take the English test to be admitted to all specialized and non-specialized groups or choose to take the French, Chinese, German, Japanese, or Korean tests to be admitted to the corresponding specialized classes.
For the remaining two tests, candidates will take 55 minutes each, with a coefficient of 1. Math and Natural Science tests will consist of 35 multiple-choice questions, while Literature and Social Science will have 20 multiple-choice questions and two essay questions.
The admission score is the sum of the three test scores on a 10-point scale, with Foreign Language multiplied by a factor of two. The Foreign Language Specialized High School will admit students from high to low until the quota is full, from the specialized system with scholarships, specialized system and non-specialized system respectively. The exam results will be announced before June 30.
