Many risk factors cause tinnitus

Specialist Doctor II Nguyen Mau Thuc, Deputy Head of the Department of Traditional Medicine, Bach Mai Hospital, said that more and more young people are facing this situation. Pressure from studying, working, prolonged stress, lack of sleep, overuse of headphones, exposure to loud noises, depression, use of drugs toxic to the ears... are all considered risk factors.

The female student is studying at a university in Hanoi , with no history of head or ear trauma; no throat or ear canal infections. For many months now, she has had persistent tinnitus, a buzzing, buzzing feeling, not too intense but persistent, especially evident at night and when high concentration is required.

The patient has been examined by many specialists: Neurology, ENT, Psychology... Basic and advanced examinations and tests have not shown any abnormalities. Modern medicine prescriptions have lasted for many months but the symptoms have hardly improved. Paraclinical indicators are stable, but the patient's spirit is impaired, sleep is disturbed, and he is anxious.

The patient was referred to the Department of Traditional Medicine, Bach Mai Hospital for treatment. After taking a thorough medical history and reviewing all previous medical records, specialist II Nguyen Mau Thuc and his team examined and meticulously reviewed the patient's previous medical records.

The patient was given a non-drug treatment regimen, with the following methods: acupuncture. After 2 weeks of treatment, the tinnitus condition improved significantly, the frequency and severity of tinnitus decreased, sleep improved, psychological relief, and the ability to concentrate on studying gradually recovered.

“Every night I hear a buzzing sound in my ears, the quieter the sound, the clearer it is. I try to forget about it when I go to school, but when I study or do homework, my mind is always in a mess, it is very difficult to concentrate… After more than 2 weeks of treatment with non-drug methods at the Faculty of Traditional Medicine - Bach Mai Hospital, my condition has improved a lot”. That is the sharing of a female university student in Hanoi.

Tinnitus erodes quality of life

Tinnitus is the feeling of hearing buzzing, humming, whistling, vibrating, or even pulsing sounds in the ears or head, even when the surroundings are completely quiet. In many cases, no clear cause can be found from the ear, nose, throat, nervous system, cardiovascular system, or metabolic diseases.

More worryingly, the symptoms do not cause severe pain or "dramatic" symptoms, but they slowly erode the quality of life, making the patient tired, irritable, less focused, and less effective in studying and working.

Doctor Thuc warns that tinnitus of unknown cause in young people is not a “trivial matter”. It could be a warning bell about a stressful lifestyle, staying up late for long periods, overuse of electronic devices, headphones, etc.

"If you have been examined in many places and the paraclinical results are normal but the symptoms persist, the patient can completely consider a more comprehensive approach," the expert recommends.

From the perspective of traditional medicine, symptoms such as persistent tinnitus, with no known physical cause, are often not just “ear problems”, but can be related to blood and qi disorders, organ function, emotions (stress, anxiety) and lifestyle. Treatment does not stop at “eliminating the tinnitus”, but also aims at overall harmony.

Therefore, when there are “invisible sounds” that bother you every day, especially when you are young, do not ignore them. Go for an early medical examination to find out the cause so that you can have timely treatment and improve your quality of life.
