"The players need time to improve. Many players lack real-life experience," coach Philippe Troussier explained the reason for the failure of U22 Vietnam. This is not the only time the French coach has talked about the experience of his players.
The problem that Mr. Troussier pointed out is probably not a matter of justification or blame. It is a practical problem that occurred in U22 Vietnam, with the generation of players born after 2001. It must be admitted that the generation of players born in 2001-2002 is the generation of players who were "disappointed" after the peak period of their seniors. In terms of ability, no player in this group has reached the level of Quang Hai, Van Hau, Thanh Chung, Viet Anh at the same age.
This leads to the second problem, they cannot compete with their seniors who are at their peak. That is why players like Huynh Cong Den can only be on the bench in the V-League or play in the First Division with much lower professional quality.
U22 Vietnam just lost and was at a disadvantage compared to their seniors.
The number of U22 Vietnam players with experience playing more than 10 matches in the V-League can be counted on the fingers of one hand. They are Luong Duy Cuong, Ho Van Cuong, Dinh Xuan Tien and Phan Tuan Tai. Some other players have played in the highest professional arena but only for a few minutes, just to get used to the atmosphere of this playground.
Not being able to compete at the V-League level, the experience of competing in international youth tournaments of Huynh Cong Den and Le Van Do is also limited. Asian tournaments in the 2020-2021 period were postponed and canceled. They have a chance at the U23 Southeast Asia tournament taking place in early 2022, however, that is a tournament in which U23 Vietnam (using players born in 2001-2002) must replace almost all of its players.
Compared to the senior generation that won the gold medal a year ago, the current U22 Vietnam team is clearly much younger. At the 31st SEA Games, the U22 Vietnam team was not rated as highly as the Quang Hai generation that won the gold medal in 2019.
However, players like Le Van Xuan, Nguyen Thanh Binh, Dung Quang Nho, Nham Manh Dung, Nguyen Van Toan, Bui Hoang Viet Anh, Ly Cong Hoang Anh are playing in the V-League and training for a long time in the national team. That is not to mention the presence of 3 pillars over 23 years old, including 2 Vietnam Golden Balls and the team's main strikers (Hung Dung, Tien Linh, Hoang Duc).
Coach Troussier has no plan to overcome the weakness of experience of U22 Vietnam.
Compared to the 2019 SEA Games champions of Quang Hai and Van Hau, the current U22 Vietnam team is inferior in every way.
The lack of experience in top-level competition is both a subjective and objective issue. Young players are not given many opportunities, but we must also look back and see that their abilities are not good enough to compete with their seniors (who have been the best generation of Vietnamese football in many years).
This is an inevitable thing that happens to the generation of players following the peak generation, in all football backgrounds. In fact, this was seen by experts a few years ago. Coach Philippe Troussier has not found an effective solution and U22 Vietnam has not completed its mission at SEA Games 32.
